The Mystery of D.B. Cooper

The Elusive Hijacker Who Vanished into Thin Air

By Rio Vijey Published 3 years ago 3 min read

On November 24th, 1971, a man who would come to be known as D.B. Cooper boarded a Northwest Orient Airlines flight from Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington. Cooper purchased his ticket under the alias "Dan Cooper," and he was unremarkable in every way. He wore a business suit, smoked cigarettes, and ordered a bourbon and soda.

Once the plane was in the air, Cooper handed a note to one of the flight attendants, Florence Schaffner. Schaffner initially assumed the note was just Cooper's phone number, but upon reading it, she saw that it contained a demand for $200,000 in cash and four parachutes.

Cooper told Schaffner that he had a bomb in his briefcase and instructed her to deliver his demands to the cockpit. The pilots complied with his demands and landed the plane in Seattle, where the money and parachutes were delivered.

Cooper then ordered the plane to take off again and fly to Mexico City, but he also instructed the pilots to fly at a low altitude and slow speed. After takeoff, Cooper donned one of the parachutes and jumped out of the rear staircase of the plane, taking the ransom money with him.

Despite an extensive manhunt, Cooper was never caught, and the case has become one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in American history.

The FBI launched a massive investigation into the hijacking, interviewing hundreds of potential suspects and pursuing numerous leads. They even created a composite sketch of Cooper based on descriptions from the flight attendants and passengers who had seen him on the plane.

But despite their efforts, the case remained unsolved. In 1980, a young boy discovered three packets of the ransom money buried on the banks of the Columbia River in Washington state, but this discovery did little to shed light on Cooper's identity or whereabouts.

Over the years, numerous theories and potential suspects have emerged in the case, but none have been definitively proven. Some have speculated that Cooper was a skilled military or parachuting expert due to his ability to survive the jump and evade detection. Others believe that he may have been an experienced criminal or even a member of law enforcement, given his calm demeanor and knowledge of the aviation industry.

One of the most intriguing pieces of evidence in the case is a placard from the rear staircase of the plane that was found in 1978 by a hunter in the woods near the town of Ariel, Washington. The placard had apparently been torn from the plane during the hijacking and was later discovered by the hunter, but it offered no new clues as to Cooper's identity

In recent years, a team of amateur investigators has made headlines for their efforts to crack the case using modern technology and forensic techniques. They have examined the parachute Cooper used, as well as the tie he left behind on the plane, in hopes of finding DNA evidence that could lead to a breakthrough in the case.

Despite their efforts, however, the mystery of D.B. Cooper remains unsolved, and his identity and whereabouts remain a subject of speculation and fascination. The case has inspired numerous books, documentaries, and even a Hollywood movie, and it continues to capture the public's imagination to this day.

In the end, the story of D.B. Cooper remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of our time, a tantalizing glimpse into the mind of a daring and elusive criminal who managed to pull off one of the most audacious heists in history. Though he may never be caught, his legend lives on, inspiring generations of storytellers and adventurers to this day.
