As I keep a keen eye on the turbocharged pace of the business landscape, I'm struck by how the concept of digital transformation has so rapidly taken on new dimensions with the advent of artificial intelligence. Having been at the forefront of technological shifts throughout my career, from working on the implementation of the London Oyster card to driving innovation and thought leadership in international tech markets, I can confidently say that the current AI revolution stands apart in its potential to fundamentally reshape how businesses operate and compete.

My 25 years of experience in technology, public service delivery, and corporate strategy inform my perspective on this current era of transformation. As a member of the House of Lords and former senior executive at Atos, I've led digital initiatives across Europe and Asia, served as the mayor of London’s director for digital London, transport and environment, and advised on major projects such as London's Olympic preparations and the development of Tech City. This breadth of experience, spanning both public and private sectors, provides me with a unique vantage point from which to assess the far-reaching implications of AI on business and society.

Why AI Is Changing Everything

Do you know we have discussed "digital transformation" for almost 20 years? Well, we're entering a new phase now. We have been laying the foundations; the connectivity, the data management strategies (cloud), and even the cybersecurity postures have been the basis of digital transformation. The evolution now is to understand the transformative impact of AI, layered upon everything that has already been achieved, and what that means for all businesses and industries.

It's not just about going digital anymore. It's about rethinking our whole approach to business with AI in mind. And to make this happen we are witnessing the rise of the "AI natives," the entirely new companies that design, build, and deliver AI as a service. They then are enabling other businesses and whole market sectors to plug and play their AI services into existing businesses, allowing them to transform their business models, cost base, go-to-market strategies, or simply to completely pivot into new offerings and markets.

To get how significant this change is, think about Netflix. Remember when they switched from mailing DVDs to streaming content? This led to a complete reconfiguration of the entire entertainment industry. That's the kind of shift we're discussing with AI — but it’s now something that all industries can do. It is about reimagining what's possible.

The Leadership Imperative

Many business leaders and their boards are quite rightly wondering how to both adopt and adapt in this moment of AI disruption. My advice? Firstly, do not reinvent the wheel. There are a vast and growing number of AI solutions already out there. Ask yourself, do I need to invest in AI or do I need to invest in a service?

Secondly, find the solutions that work for you and your business strategy. This is all about recognising that AI is evolving superfast, and sometimes, it's better to partner with the experts than try to do it all yourself.

Thirdly, be ready to adapt or even fully pivot. If you're running a business don't get too caught up in the hype — but don't ignore it, either.

From what I've seen and heard, good leaders in this AI age need to:

1. Establish what AI can do for their specific business.

2. Make sure their AI plans fit with their overall business strategy and are prepared to change it.

3. Help their team adapt to the changes AI will bring both operationally and culturally.

A Path Forward for Businesses of All Sizes

You might think, "But I'm not running some huge corporation." No worries. You don't have to go all in on AI right away. I always recommend starting small.

Some tips I've picked up along the way are to take it step by step, keep everyone in the loop about what's going on, have a solid plan (but be ready to pivot it if needed), and keep checking to ensure that what you're doing is actually helping.

Embracing the AI Future

To be clear, there is a whole new global market of exciting and innovative AI services exploding across all industries. But this development has been building for some time. I've been watching this space since 2018 when at Atos we partnered with Google Cloud to establish our first set of global AI labs, and there's now massive acceleration in the AI marketplace and it is scaling fast and is delivering fast.

So how do I conclude? Well, AI is not just about cutting costs and jobs; it's about reimagining what your business can do. This will create as well as change.

The enterprises that will emerge victorious will harness AI's potential while overcoming its complexities. This will require vision, tech smarts, and the ability to adapt.

The era of AI transformation is here — we can create businesses that will be more efficient, innovative, and competitive. Let's make the most of it.
