The Day My Inbox Became a Battlefield

How one email from HMRC forced me to take my influencer career seriously.

When I first started creating content, my biggest challenge was getting noticed. I’d spend hours filming, editing, and uploading, hoping that one of my videos might finally take off. I wasn’t thinking about brand deals or tax returns, I was thinking about creativity, connection, and the joy of building something from scratch.

For months, my inbox was quiet. Then one day, it wasn’t.

The first brand email felt like a milestone, proof that someone, somewhere, believed in what I was doing. Then another arrived. And another. Before long, I was juggling collaborations, product reviews, affiliate links, and sponsorship contracts. It felt like the breakthrough I had dreamed of, but it also came with a new kind of pressure I didn’t expect.

Each deal had its own terms, payments, and deadlines. Some brands paid instantly, others delayed for months. A few paid in dollars or euros, and suddenly exchange rates mattered. My once-simple PayPal account turned into a maze of transactions, and the spreadsheets I made to “keep track” only made me more confused.

It wasn’t just about the money, it was about the responsibility. For the first time, I realised that every post I made wasn’t just content; it was work. I was earning an income, but I didn’t have the slightest idea how to manage it properly.

The chaos reached its peak one afternoon when I opened my inbox to find an email from HMRC about self-assessment. My stomach dropped. I’d heard horror stories about influencers getting into trouble for missing tax deadlines or not reporting income properly. I scrolled through months of receipts, trying to make sense of what I owed, and for the first time in my creative career, I felt completely lost.

That night, I sat in front of my laptop surrounded by open tabs: government guides, accounting blogs, and endless forum threads about taxes for creators. The more I read, the less I understood. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to do things right, I just didn’t know how.

Then, in one of those late-night searches, I stumbled upon a website specialising in Accountants for influencers. I hesitated at first, convinced that hiring professional help was something only “big creators” did. But the truth was, I had already become one, not by follower count, but by responsibility.

The first consultation changed everything. For the first time, someone explained exactly what I needed to do: how to register properly, what expenses I could claim, and how to plan ahead instead of panicking every April. They turned what had felt like a mountain into a set of simple, manageable steps.

Within weeks, the stress started to fade. My finances made sense, my taxes were under control, and I had the peace of mind to focus on what I actually loved, creating. The funny thing was, once I stopped worrying about the numbers, my creativity flourished. I collaborated more, explored new ideas, and finally had the confidence to treat my work like the real business it had become.

Looking back, I wish I’d asked for help sooner. I used to think professionalism meant doing everything myself, but now I know it’s about knowing when to hand things over.

So if you’re an influencer who’s drowning in spreadsheets or panicking over tax season, take this as your sign. You don’t need to be an expert in everything, you just need to be smart enough to get the right support.

Because your creativity deserves room to grow, and you can’t do that if you’re buried under admin. Let the experts handle the numbers, so you can get back to doing what you do best, creating something worth sharing.
