The Break

Time to Rest

By Margaret BrennanPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

The Break

I’d been at it for days, now. Between writing and editing my photos, there just weren’t enough hours in the day. Of course, there were other things that needed to be done. The clothes that sat in the hamper needed washing and drying. Naturally, the nest step would be to put away the clean clothes.

Maybe I should dust every day but to be honest, I don’t. Those little dust bunnies get wiped away every other day. Speaking of dust bunnies, I’ll set my Roomba to the “clean” mode every three days but I’ll still use the vacuum once a week so I can clean the areas where the Roomba doesn’t fit. While the Roomba is don’t its thing, I’ll attend to other household chores.

There have been times when I will suddenly glance at the clock on my desk and think, “OMG, I’ve done it again. It’s two in the afternoon and I haven’t taken a thing out of the freezer for dinner”. It’s now scramble time.

Guess you might have noticed that I haven’t even touched on tidying the living room and kitchen.

And, no, I also haven’t mentioned my exercise classes. Twice a week, I have an aerobic dance class and once a week, I attend Zumba.

As the saying goes: do much to do, so little time.

Do I get up early to get all this done? Oh, heck no! My normal time to wake up is anywhere between seven and eight in the morning unless I have an early hour appointment. However, once I’m up, I rarely stop.

There are so many other people like me. We just don’t know when to quit. I have friends who tell me they love their afternoon naps. What? A nap in the afternoon? Why? Yet, there are many in my age bracket the really enjoy an afternoon siesta.

Getting back to my writing: I started this little essay a few hours ago. Yes, I did pause my thoughts a few times. I went out to the freezer we keep in the garage and took out meat for dinner, washed the breakfast dishes, tidied the bedroom, put soiled clothes in the hamper, hit the supermarket for milk (we’d extinguished the gallon we had), made lunch, did a few errands for my husband, did some internet research for him, had a cup of tea, came back to the computer and edited it a few more photographs, and now I’m back writing.

I can’t believe where the time has gone. It’s after 5:30pm and I feel like I’ve gotten nothing done.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I did stop when my friend dropped by – for all of THREE minutes to drop something off. That was my break for the day.

I just got a text from my pharmacy saying I had three prescriptions that needed refilling. However, I had to stop writing and look up the codes. No, they didn’t use Rx numbers. They used the medication code. Once I knew what meds they referred to, I knew the refills could wait a few days. But it was another delay in writing.

Huh! The sky south of my house is getting dark and I hear thunder.

Okay, see? Not another delay but a distraction! I heard the thunder and turned my head to see from which direction it came. Then of course, I had to check my weather app to see if the storm would blow in this direction. Nope. We’re clear. It’ll stay south.

Oh, and I just remembered. One of our closest friends will be having a birthday in a few days. I need to make him a card. Yes, I make all my own greeting cards. That’s another hobby I’ve given myself. Next month, I can begin my crocheting. I plan to make one scarf for each of my granddaughters. They both live in the cool north and would appreciate them.

I think right now is a good time to take a break. My back hurts from sitting on this really, very old and dilapidated office chair. I’ll go sit on the couch and rest for a bit. I’ll give my old bones and my brain an afternoon siesta.

Wow, that was quick. I was on the couch, enjoying a book I’m reading and got restless, like I usually do when I try to relax. I read a few pages then had an idea for another story. Got off the couch and came back to my computer.

So, now, you might ask, how long was my break. A total of FIVE MINUTES!

Oh well. Now that this is finished, my notes for my next story jotted down in my little notebook, it’s time to get my butt in the kitchen and make dinner!

I’ll shut down my brain later, some time around eleven pm when my weary bones make their way to the bedroom for the night.
