Free hand art work by Sara Wilson

Hi. Me again.

It's been a minute and I'm excited to be writing this. I also kind of feel like I'm going to vomit. I am not good at self-promotion. However, I thought it only fair that I should promote myself a little. Besides, if I don't- how else can anyone possibly know that I wrote a freakin book?!

I love promoting and sharing the work of others that I have enjoyed... but I am always at a loss for words when it comes time to do that for myself. So, I'm going to keep this as short as possible and say it again... I wrote a book.

It's a small book (only 73 pages) filled with works some of you may have already read. But it's mine... and I'm proud of it.

I have spent so many years of my life writing and hiding it from the world to protect people's feelings. I feel like you own your stories and should be able to tell them however they happened, but people don't typically enjoy seeing their actions on paper. They get angry at you for telling your own experiences. I write to deal with heavy emotions a majority of the time. I feel safe here in this community and I feel like if anyone understands me, y'all do.

So- naturally, I'd also like to share what I feel is a huge accomplishment of mine with you guys!

As a first book, I actually just wanted to keep things lighthearted and unrealistic. Yes, it is horror and creepy vibes. But it's not real-life experiences like some of my other content on here. It's a break from reality to vibe with the strange, abnormal, creepy crawlies of my mind.

I tried to target my book to a young adult audience specifically because of my own middle school experience. When I was around 13-14, I would write short horror stories using my friends as different characters. One of their favorite parts of the day was when we would sit at lunch, and I would read whatever story I had been working on to them. I wanted to give a similar feeling to the younger people I know.

Those friends I used to read to at lunch have since grown up and we all have kids of our own. Some of them within that same age range. One friend in particular has read one of the stories to her own daughter and it was really cool to see her enjoying something that initially had her mom as a character. It was also fun to see her compare me to Dr. Suess.

"You know.. your poems remind me of Dr. Suess.. but if he was creepy and wrote about disturbing clowns instead of cats in hats." -Maddy age 13.

My book contains five short stories and is sprinkled with little poetry breaks in between. The cover art is a free hand drawing I did that took so many hours of my life. I wanted it to be something eye catching and colorful mixed with a little bit of black and white. However- at the end of the day, I chose to process the entire image through a black and white filter because I liked the way it looked better. So- I ultimately wasted all that time...

Here is a YouTube short of the original drawing for anyone interested-

If you've gotten this far and you're curious and feeling inclined to read my book- here is the link:

If you do read it, please leave me a review. Good or bad. I know some things aren't meant for everyone and I'm ok with that. I want to know all of your thoughts! Even if they make me cry like the sensitive baby I actually am. OK, thank you! Bye ^_^

How exciting Sara! Congratulations! I really enjoyed the short story that you wrote when you were a kid! I'll have to check the book out! Kudos to you my friend! 💕

  • I hear ya, sister. Congratulations on such an accomplishment! And on receiving such high praise from Maddy. Even if every critic protests, there is no praise as seeing the light & joy spring forth from a child's eyes. I shall be keeping this up on my computer to return & read the whole once our errands are done. Congrats again!

Super congrats to you, Sara!!! So proud that you brought a dream to life! And the final image you chose fits perfectly. Love the different eyes she has. And the little square swirlies at the corners of her mouth gives it a ‘Nightmare before Christmas’ vibe. No matter how long it took, the result is amazing! Congrats again. I’ll definitely bookmark this and check your book out!

Damn, Sara! Don't hear from you in a while and then, boom, a book! I am adding this to my "To be Bought and cherished" pile. I am not the target audience lol, but I will buy it and read it and review it. Cos, I want to. I want to say I am proud and congrats, because aside from the stories and the poems, you did the artwork too - always knew you were a talented little crybaby (your words, remember) This was a most awesome piece to open up to and I hope it gets Top Story so loads know about Sara Wilson, the awesome book children's book author.

  • Loved this. You have mad skills in the rollercoaster of illustration. Keep it up
