Shannon’s Journey to digital design

Shannon Bartels studied Digital Arts and Design with a burning passion for breaking the boundaries of sustainable digital designs. Creative arts have always been a subject of importance to her. This was borne out of her enthusiasm to create new and unique designs.

“In college, I was involved in various activities and groups, such as the Kent State Marching Band. I also spent one year as the secretary of the Sustainable Living Club. I used the avenue to help educate students in various ways to make a difference in our world through sustainable design practice.”

Shannon knew she wanted to do digital designs right from the beginning of her college years. It is no wonder she studied Arts and Design in college. But is she going to end up working for the top design agencies as her mates did?

“This was a big question that I have always had in mind during my college years. Every student wanted to work with the top design agencies around.”

For the most of Shannon’s design journey, she thought towards that direction too, but she has always believed that working for the top guns will never allow her to get to the peak of her creativity.

The reason behind her thought is not farfetched. Her idea behind this is that, when you are hired by the big boys in the design industry, you have to play by their rule.” While this is entirely okay for a lot of people, it does not give a small number of people a sense of accomplishment.

Some designers just want to pass a message with their unique design approach.

“After working for several top-design companies, it personally did not give me any satisfaction of personal accomplishments working for these companies. I wanted to communicate through brands with my designs.”

Shannon after having her works featured in major print media like News Today, and many other international trade shows, she concluded that she was going to follow her dreams of creating her agency built on the foundation of creating messages uniquely from her designs while helping small business grow.

Digital design is a huge industry, even as a sub-niche to digital marketing. Most of the top brands had all the top companies has their clients. To break into the industry, you need to be good at what you do. Your designs need to pass a message across; otherwise, it could be tough to make a living off of your creatives.

Helping businesses with digital designs where it matters

After leaving her job in a major design company in New York to start her small design business. Starting from the ground up was not a smooth sail. She began with freelancing by helping business owners through her creative designs.

Shannon pointed out that it was easy to design for different companies of different sizes when she started as a freelancer. But settling for that would defeat the purpose of helping businesses with her design.

She decided to narrow down her clients to people who could not pay the high price to get a designer for their brand. In other words, small businesses that needed growth.

“Personally, I enjoyed working with agencies that overflow in design jobs and taking on that design work (freelance). However, I do need higher clients to keep fonds available to help these customers at a lower rate.”

Her primary target market is small businesses, but she would also like to attract more substantial business profiles. Shannon is particular about working with Nonprofits organizations with a cause. She loves working with a growing business or smaller startups (not always the best budget, but she enjoys watching them grow).

She has settled with helping small businesses with her digital design, and with that, she feels content with her work.
