My Story

Shelley's Journey to Vocal

By Shelley WengerPublished 4 years ago 3 min read
A Family Picture (after we got caught in the rain!)

I have been a freelance blogger and writer for several years now. I started looking for something that I could do in my spare time (HA) as a new mom. So, I started out taking classes to become a medical transcriptionist. I could type fast and, had some medical training due to my career as a veterinary technician (animal nurse).

Well, I found out that it was a lot harder than I imagined. Then, I tried to take courses for medical coding and billing. Only after I finished the courses, did I realize that I couldn’t get a job without experience. You also couldn’t work from home, until you had plenty of experience.

So, I went back to work, but I didn’t give up on my dream of finding a way to work from home. I started a virtual assistant business, Virtually Shelley. However, after working with another assistant for a while, I realized that I preferred writing to any other type of work that a virtual assistant does.

I didn’t have the time to find clients to write for. Yes, I know that you can make a lot more money that way, but I wanted to make sure that my spare time was used wisely (for making money). I found a company called Blog Mutt. They have since changed their name to Verblio, but they are my main source of income from freelance writing. They have many clients that I can write for, in many different industries. I can pick and choose, working whenever I have a few minutes to write out a piece.

I also wrote some non-fiction books that are for sale on Amazon. However, that takes a lot of time. Not only do you have to write them, but you also have to get them ready to publish. Then, you have to market your books, or they won’t sell. I don’t spend any time on my marketing so I may get a few cents every month on the ones that I published a while ago. I would love to try my hand at writing fiction, at some point!

My time is really important to me because I consider myself a full-time mother to two rambunctious boys, a full-time wife, and a full-time farHer (a female farmer). We have six acres that houses way too many chickens, eight goats, ducks, doves, pigs, and much more. We also have a hay and a cornfield to provide for the animals.

I work part-time doing what I love (taking care of animals) at a small animal veterinary hospital. Then, I write when I can. As always, I hoped to be able to write when my children were in school, but with everything going on, they aren’t there as much as I would like.

I am excited about Vocal because I have always had to write about what the clients want and this will give me the opportunity to write about some things that are important to me. I can even tell my story so that others can enjoy it.

My goal started as publishing articles that haven’t sold at Verblio or other content marketing sites. I did start a website a few years ago, but I haven’t kept up with it. This might be easier than that! I am also excited to share some of my fiction work. Maybe, by sharing it with others, I can decide whether or not to follow through with publishing a short novel. I may even share exerts from my non-fiction pieces.

I am excited to be a part of Vocal, and I hope that you enjoy my writing! Maybe I’ll even make a little money to help support my family and farm.
