Robert Oppenheimer, born into a wealthy Jewish family in New York City, was a prominent physicist. His father, a successful executive in America, had left Germany, while his mother was a painter. Oppenheimer's early interest in minerals and sciences led him to attend prestigious schools and pursue physics at Cambridge and Gottingen after graduating from Harvard. His doctoral work and the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation showcased his potential as a theoretical physicist. Despite being a chain smoker and making poor judgments, Oppenheimer's interest in Eastern philosophy and mysticism, as well as his involvement in the Manhattan Project, shaped his complex and influential figure in the field of physics. His personal experiences with the Nazis and support for German Jews fleeing persecution, along with his crucial role as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II, demonstrated his significant impact on the development of the nuclear bomb.

The group consisted of distinguished physicists such as John Hasbrouck van Vleck, Robert Serber, Hans Bethe, Edward Teller, and various others. Their main focus was on creating various types of bombs, such as the gun-type 'Thin Man' and the implosion-type 'Fat Man'. The Trinity nuclear test was conducted in New Mexico, releasing explosive energy equivalent to 25,000 tonnes of TNT. It was von Neumann who proposed a spherical shape and shaped charges to reduce the required amount of plutonium. Metallurgists at Los Alamos successfully resolved the issue of casting plutonium into a sphere. The design phase of the 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' bombs was nearing completion in 1945. The test bomb, known as 'The Gadget', was detonated safely in a remote and isolated area. The explosion resulted in a crater, melted sand, and formed a mushroom cloud. Oppenheimer is incorrectly credited with quoting from the Bhagavad Gita. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the only instances of nuclear weapons being utilized in warfare. The decision to use the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was viewed as justifiable to compel the Japanese to surrender and potentially save millions of lives. The bombing of Nagasaki, just three days later, was deemed unjustified. The development of nuclear weapons has introduced an existential threat but has also ensured a 'nuclear peace' among superpowers. Oppenheimer's reputation reached its peak after the war, leading to his appointment as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton. Oppenheimer played a key role in overseeing nuclear proliferation through the Atomic Energy Commission. The development of the hydrogen bomb and Oppenheimer's opposition to it, along with other scientists, was due to the potential for catastrophic damage and nuclear conflict.

President Truman, however, approved the creation of the hydrogen bomb. The initial hydrogen bomb, known as 'Ivy Mike', underwent testing in 1952 and was 450 times more potent than the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer faced suspicion during the Second Red Scare, resulting in the revocation of his security clearance. The period following his security hearing proved challenging for Oppenheimer, eliciting varied responses from the academic community. Robert Oppenheimer, the head of the Los Alamos Laboratory, played a pivotal role in the Manhattan Project, significantly contributing to our comprehension of the cosmos. Oppenheimer's investigations into molecular dynamics and nuclear reactions broadened our understanding of the universe. While he spearheaded the development of the first atomic bomb in World War II, he also harbored ethical reservations about the deployment of such weaponry. He encountered persecution during the Second Red Scare in the 1950s. Despite not being awarded a Nobel Prize, Oppenheimer's legacy endures as that of a distinguished scientist of contemporary times.
