Sharing my art and love with the world

By Nicole HiebertPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

All my life, I have loved to design characters. Since I was a child, I have always been very artistically inclined. The first style of art I mastered, is paper cut art, which I began at seven years old. I am the oldest of four kids and I often held mini art classes for my younger siblings, teaching them my paper cut art style.

In paper cut art, I take different cuttings and glue them together to make a big mosaic picture from small scraps of paper. I always need very sharp scissors, like my beloved pink Fiskars, to get the job done.

Today, as an adult, I am a crochet and fiber artist and continue to rely on the durability and strength of my trusty Fiskars.

My latest and greatest passion is my project, Drawing 2 Doll. I transform a child's drawing into a unique handmade crocheted doll, turning their imagined friend into a real toy for them. I absolutely love bringing a child joy by taking their ideas and creating a physical item they can hold and love. The creative challenge of taking a child’s obscure drawing, down to the finest freckle and craziest color combinations , and surprising them with their own doll is rewarding.

My favorite creation for my Drawing 2 Doll is a multi-colored dinosaur with an oversized head and a rainbow mohawk mane spiked down his back. This child’s doll matched his amazing imagination!

Another Drawing 2 Doll that I created is a small penguin with a removable hat. I was tempted to make a matching scarf but I always stay true to the child’s drawing.

The penguin must have whispered my wish to her child owner, as later the mother told me that the little girl learned to knit, making her penguin his own matching scarf.

I have been collaborating with some local businesses to work towards adding a colouring contest to their social media . With hopes to encourage the kids to get creative and enter some drawings . The ultimate winner will have their drawing made into a doll the prize for the business give away in their colouring contest.

I also do promotions for local businesses , Including flyers, bookmarks, cards ,chalk art and whatever interesting ways things I can think of.

Drawing 2 Doll is my current favorite project. This project allows my artistic creations to encourage children to dream big and that their imagination can become a reality. Creating these dolls is an honor to fulfill a child’s dream; I do these for free. As a child, I imagined and drew creatures ranging from replicas to my original designs of merged animals in bright colors. I drew super animals, combining all my favorite aspects of each animal into one. I imagine the joy I would have had if a person had given me my glittery, winged, bendable , dragon princess to hold.

Now I have a beautiful, spunky child named Maribel. She is three years old with curly hair, a bright smile and lots of energy. Like me, she has a huge imagination and, I maybe biased but I believe, she is very artistic and talented at creating. Of course, I want her to have the best, so I bought her a pair of Fiskars, too. She cuts leaves. She cuts ribbons. Occasionally she cuts hair! And of course, she cuts paper as I teach her to glue and make things from her little scraps of paper.

My next project is making a book documenting these imagined creatures starting from a child’s drawing and becoming the unique doll I created to match their picture. Along with the drawings will include the stories behind the child’s drawing and what inspired them to create their unique character.

Thank you for reading my story and considering me for this contest. I am in no way a “writer” but I do appreciate your company and products. Thank you for the inspiration to put my story into words.
