Life’s Melody

My father is a huge impact on my musical choices. On the ride to school if we weren't bleeding from our ears after listening to NPR it was an old-school Motown-type song or alternative rock. However, my dad's all-time favorite artist was the artist formerly known as Prince or just Prince for you young-ins. I must admit throughout every call ride I would mouth the words in secret so he wouldn’t actually know how much I was enjoying his music. Even more than his music though, Prince impacted me just by the way he was an unapologetic weird walking egomaniac and I always felt that was just the coolest way to be. A favorite song of mine would be either be When the Dove Cry. When the Dove’s Cry is a song from the medley to the lyricists to the placement of breaks is a brilliant portrait of the psyche of a man in love.

Another song that developed me that plays at every family together is Cha-cha Slide by DJ Casper I mean they even made a movie about it. Though I suppose this is more of the memories and the people some of whom aren’t here anymore associated with the music, than the music itself. I mean it's just a dance, but I can’t even count how many times a laughing and jovial younger me dance to this song. I actually just did it a few days. There’s also a video of me dancing to it and when I was three, it just has to be on here.

Only the Good Die Young by Billie Joel are as complex as it is compelling. Growing up in a Baptist home faith had always encompassed everything we did and as a black religion was the backbone of the family... Yet in all theology, you question the faith honestly, I don't know the answer though I am a believer perhaps I always was one doubt is one thing that I can never truly always overcome.

Furthermore, in my life, a lot of loved ones have died young this song also encompassed that feeling it as well as the line in which I rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saint which honestly yeah who wouldn't? Seriously though church people are annoying especially when they act holy like don't you read your book no one’s holy. Gah that's one of the reasons I stop going. The up-tempo beat in this song and the happiness that goes with really represents my upbeat personality.

Speaking of upbeat, Celebrate Youth by Rick Springfield there are so many songs about enjoying being young this one takes the cake because it's the one I heard most when I was a kid plus it has the line “... But everybody sees in the younger one the hope.” which is so powerfully true plus the title is one that I tried to live my life with I'm not a child anymore but I'm only 24 I still have soooo much celebrating to do!

SpaceShip by Kanye West, before he was the dreaded YE pretty much, sums my feelings work in almost any capacity. Honestly, we were lied to about hard work and how it contributes to a better life it doesn't. The system is made to congratulate those, nope it's made for us to be used and abused and to make little to no money so we can keep coming. It made me express my anger about work and how disgraceful the whole system is.

I by Kendrick Lamar shouldn't need an explanation but in simple I love being me from my flaws to drawbacks to my abilities, from my mind to my ugly long feet it's all so me and therefore amazing. I'm also grateful to my upbringing and my family for shaping me so that I can be this way. Dollar and a Dream by J. Cole is a story of a man who wants to be rich we’ll look further than this guy a bit see the sentiment is there I'm hungry and confident like J.Cole who happens to be one of my favorites artists I also believe I'm one a million curiosity who happens to be afraid that I will always be a sideline player in this thing called life. It definitely sets that fire under me to be great and I believe I am great I just want the rest of the world to see it.

Smooth Criminal completes this playlist although there are other songs, I would pick this one song, and the music video completes me as of right now. First and foremost is Michael Jackson whose childhood was complete without the king of pop plus its storytelling something that obviously I love and it's from a movie and I adore movies, not the ones it's from it's awful, but I digress with that mind this is my life playlist and like all my playlist it feels incomplete even still I think it takes a complete story that that that’s all folks.
