How to Secure Your Social Accounts from Hacking?

By shakeelPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Hacking is extremely common these days and sadly, the number of relevant cases is increasing by the day. It is affecting both individuals and businesses. As a result, people not only suffer financially but emotionally as well.

As of now, it's becoming more common among social media users. Social media accounts are being hacked often, more than ever before. That being said, it's imperative to protect your social media accounts and as a matter of fact, protecting your social media accounts isn't as difficult as you think.

The following are a few tips and tricks that can help you keep your social media accounts secure. If you're not following them already, you must start doing it today.

Go for Complex Passwords

First and foremost, you need to be very careful with your social media passwords. Many people keep simple passwords so that they can easily remember them. Yes, it's easier to remember simple and small passwords but do you know simpler and smaller passwords are easier to crack as well?

Oftentimes, hackers hack into your social media accounts simply by guessing your social media passwords, and keeping complex passwords is the only solution to it. Use a mix of alphabets, digits, and special characters when setting up your password. Also, try to change your social media passwords frequently, at least once a month, and make sure not to repeat an old password.

Two Factor Authentication

It's pretty simple to crack a password if the hacker knows your social media pattern; however, two-factor authentication makes it nearly impossible to log into social media apps. That's right. When you switch on two-factor authentication, you get a text message or email with a security code every time you add the password.

The only way you can log into a social media account is after you add the security code. Thus, two-factor authentication is the best option you have. It can keep your social media accounts secure even if someone gets to know your password.

Install Internet Security Software

Using public Wi-Fi has become a trend as well as a necessity. Everyone uses public Wi-Fi when traveling or hanging out with friends or family. While you may not realize it, public Wi-Fi demands personal information like email addresses and contact numbers to get you connected and provide you with internet access.

Such things often lead to hacking as the owner has access to your data. Of course, not using public Wi-Fi at all isn't an option, so what you can do is get reliable internet security software. It will keep your device protected from the hacker as they won't be able to trace it. Pretty simple!

Use a VPN

Another effective way to keep your device safe is by using a VPN. VPN, an abbreviation for virtual private network, can protect your device from outside interference by removing your IP address and hiding your location. Hackers mostly access your data by tracing your IP address, so it won't be wrong to say that a VPN eliminates the risk from its roots.

Thankfully, there are a lot of VPNs available these days, and not all of them are paid. Yes, you can get a reasonable VPN for free. All you need to do is download and install one and switch it on every time you connect to the internet and use your social media accounts.

Keep Your Social Media Accounts Private

Lastly, I suggest you keep your social media accounts private. Although it’s a personal choice, having a public account means getting more attention. While it’s good to get some attention once in a blue moon, getting a lot of attention all the time could be harmful as you never know the agenda behind it.

A lot of people, mostly hackers, keep an eye on public profiles with the sole intention to harm others. They write viruses and send out spam messages with suspicious links to hack into your smartphones and subsequently, social media accounts. Therefore, it’s best to stay low-key. If nobody knows what you’re offering, nobody will think about harming you in any way.

The Final Word...

Social media is a double-edged sword. It has its compensation but it also brings along a lot of problems. Hacking happens to be one of them. Social media hacking is extremely common and regardless of the strong security systems of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, social media hacking cases are reported every day. Thus, it's imperative to be careful when using all these social media platforms. Digital security must be a priority!
