How To Be A Modern Viking

(Yes, Even With Wi-Fi and a Mortgage)

By That ‘Freedom’ GuyPublished 7 months ago Updated 7 months ago 5 min read

Let’s be clear right from the start:

If your idea of being a Viking involves fur-trimmed cosplay, quoting Thor in the mirror, and swiping Tinder while wearing a hammer necklace... you’re doing it wrong.

Because being a Modern Viking isn’t about looking the part. It’s about living the part.

It’s about burning off the fluff of modern life and revealing the steel underneath.

And no, you don’t have to live in a fjord (although, that would be quite the power move).

You just have to live like your ancestors are watching—and you’d rather not be remembered as the one who cried when the Wi-Fi dropped.

So let’s get to it.

This is your longship. Your compass. Your battle-plan for being a Viking in 2025.

All the good bits, anyway. None of the pillaging.

(Unless you count the meat aisle at Aldi.)

⚔️ 1. Build the Body, Forge the Will

By Risen Wang on Unsplash

If you’ve got a body—and I assume you do—then it’s your first weapon.

But let’s be real. Most of you are swinging around a metaphorical butter knife.

Vikings didn’t lift because it was leg day. They lifted because they had to carry boats overland and drag screaming berserkers out of bar fights.

Today, your battles might be with spreadsheets and existential dread, but the principle holds:

* Train your body to obey.

* Train your mind to persist.

* Train your spirit to laugh in the face of chaos.

You don’t have to be shredded. You just need to be capable. Of carrying your pack, climbing your mountains, and defending your damn sandwich if necessary.

🌍 2. Travel Like You’re Mapping Midgard

By Luca Bravo on Unsplash

Modern Vikings don’t just adventure—they absorb.

They walk unfamiliar streets with wide eyes and open ears. They eat the food, learn the customs, ask the questions.

You’re not a tourist. You’re a wanderer with purpose.

Go to Iceland. Or Istanbul. Or Ipswich, if it calls to you.

Sleep in hostels. Camp out. Walk forest trials. Watch people. Listen. Smell spices. Drink coffee like it’s an ancient rite.

You will never grow in a box.

And every stamp in your passport is a rune etched into the saga of your life.

🛠️ 3. Master the Sacred Art of Not Being Useless

By Clark Young on Unsplash

You know what’s not Viking?

Calling your dad because you don’t know how to reset a fuse.

Sobbing at the idea of parallel parking.

Refusing to sew a button because “I don’t do needles.”

Grow up.

Modern Vikings are resourceful. We make it our business to know things. useful things. like how to hang a TV on the wall or wire in a socket.

They know how to patch a coat, fix a hinge, cook a damn meal, and change a tyre without filming it for Instagram.

And if they don’t know?

They learn.

Because that’s what warriors of the modern age do. They collect skills like others collect Funko Pops.

🧥 4. Simplify Like a Monk Who Bench Presses

By Pablo Arroyo on Unsplash

You don’t need 47 pairs of shoes. You need boots you can walk to the ends of the earth in.

You don’t need four drawers of gym gear. You need a kit that works, breathes, and doesn’t smell like the wrong end of a longship.

Your clothing should be:

* Functional

* Durable

* Good enough to die in

Build your life around what you need. Then—and only then—add what you love.

That’s how you create a life of value, not clutter.

Minimalism isn’t aesthetic. It’s philosophy.

Strip the excess, and suddenly your soul has space to breathe again.

🏠 5. Your Space Is a Reflection of Your Mind

By Nikolay on Unsplash

You want to know someone’s inner world? Look at their flat.

Is it clean? Functional? Light-filled? Does it smell of wood, oil, and quiet strength?

Or is it a mess of tangled wires, empty Monster cans, and unwashed pants that have developed their own community?

Clean your damn space.

Not because Pinterest told you to.

Because clarity lives in simplicity.

Because when you reduce the noise around you, you can finally hear your own thoughts.

Your home is your hall. Make it worthy.

📚 6. Read. Study. Create. Repeat.

By Gülfer ERGİN on Unsplash

The original Vikings didn’t write, but they remembered everything. Skalds—poet-warriors—could recite entire sagas. That’s like having Spotify Premium in your skull.

Today, we’ve got the opposite problem: infinite access, zero retention.

So read. Read ancient texts. Read science. Read weird fantasy novels.

Learn a thing a week. Carve your brain like you’d carve runes into stone.

And then?

Create.

Write. Paint. Design. Speak.

Leave a mark. Not a smudge.

Modern Vikings are not just warriors. They’re builders, teachers, makers of worlds.

🧭 7. Have a Code (Because Most People Don’t)

You know what the modern world lacks?

Rules that actually mean something.

Your old Viking ancestors didn’t have HR departments. They had honour, reputation, and the ever-looming possibility of being called out by a village goat if you were a coward.

Here’s the Modern Viking Code:

  • Wake up early
  • Train, even when you don’t feel like it
  • Tell the truth (even when it burns)
  • Laugh more than you complain
  • Never leave a trail of half-finished attempts behind you
  • Live with fury and gentleness in equal measure

If it wouldn’t impress Odin, maybe don’t do it.

🧠 8. Keep Your Thoughts Cosmic, Your Actions Grounded

By Greg Rakozy on Unsplash

Modern Vikings don’t just exist. They contemplate.

They ask big questions:

  • What if the Earth is a machine?
  • Why are we here?
  • Why does toast always fall butter-side down?

These questions matter.

Because Vikings saw themselves as tiny specks in a huge story. Cannon fodder for an apocalyptic war against giants and monsters.

They knew they were small, and that made them great.

Modern Vikinghood is about the grand perspective and the small act.

Clean the kitchen. Save the world. Same thing.

⚡ The Final Roar

Being a Modern Viking is not about heritage.

It’s about choice.

It’s about saying:

“I will live with strength, wisdom, and wild-hearted wonder.

I will simplify my life and fortify my spirit.

I will explore, create, build, and laugh.

I will not bow to modern malaise.”

So, to those reading this with a slice of toast in one hand and a phone in the other:

Put down the toast.

Grab your metaphorical axe.

Clean your room.

Go outside.

Train. Learn. Wander.

Live like someone out there will read your story aloud by firelight.

🪓 Journal Prompt of the Day:

“What area of my life have I over-complicated, over-indulged, or neglected in favour of comfort?

What would the Viking version of me do today to reclaim it?”

That’s your longship launched.

Let’s see how far you sail, wanderer.

🪓 Like what you read?🪓

🪙 Then toss a coin into the fountain.

Make a wish —

for wilder words, sharper truths,

and more wild-folk with wild hair doing wild things.

Each offering stirs the water, feeds the fire,

and helps one such beast keep writing beneath the stars.
