Gratitude for the Sun and All Creation.

A Thanksgiving Feature.

“Have you commanded the morning since your days began and caused the dawn to know its place?”

Job 38:12, ESV, The Bible.

Thanksgiving settles over the heart like a soft cloak. Not loud. Not hurried. More like a gentle stirring that reminds us to notice what we usually pass by. This morning a song slipped into my thoughts before I fully woke. It lingered there with quiet insistence, like light seeping through the edge of a curtain. I felt my spirit rise in gratitude, steady and certain, as if the melody itself were a hand guiding me toward appreciation.

That truth deepens the gratitude in my heart. The world is not held by accident. Every dawn is a deliberate act of divine power and care.

I find myself thankful for the earth beneath me. The stones that endure every season with calm resolve. The soil that bears every footprint. The hills shaped by long ages of wind and rain. There is something comforting in the loyalty of the ground. It does not change its mind. It simply holds us.

Water enters my thoughts with its patient, persistent movement. Rivers carve paths that become life for the land. Rain washes dust from weary days. Seas stretch into horizons that quiet the mind. Water cleanses and restores. It teaches a sort of strength that does not shout for attention. I am grateful for its clarity and its softness.

The wind follows with its invisible presence. It bends the trees. It cools the skin. It carries the scent of changing seasons. The wind reminds me that unseen forces can shape life just as powerfully as visible ones. It whispers of God’s nearness, steady even when silence surrounds us.

Fire deserves honour as well. Its warmth, its glow, its ability to comfort a cold night. Fire holds an ancient mystery. It offers light. It sustains life. It gathers people together. It shows how God provides both energy and protection.

Rain is another gift too easily overlooked. It interrupts plans yet it nurtures fields. It settles restless dust. It brings new life to seeds hidden in the dark earth. Rain is renewal in motion, falling without preference or prejudice, performing its quiet service with grace.

Then come the people in our lives. Those who show kindness. Those who offer encouragement. Those who challenge us. Those who test our patience. Even the ones who walk in darkness. Scripture speaks with stark honesty that the evil man was created by God for the evil day. This is not a comfortable truth, yet it reminds us that nothing lies beyond His understanding or His authority. All things answer to Him. All things serve His purpose, even when we cannot see how.

The song that greeted me this morning stirred all these thoughts together. Gratitude for simple things and immense ones. Gratitude for joys and burdens. Gratitude for what glimmers and what quietly endures. It felt as though the melody wanted to be spoken aloud, carried into the world rather than hidden within my chest.

There is far more to celebrate than whatever we believe is missing. The sun rises under God’s command. The dawn takes its place because He calls it forth. The earth supports us. Water refreshes us. Wind breathes across creation. Fire warms and lights. Rain restores what has grown dry. People shape us, teach us and reveal the depth of God’s patience.

Thanksgiving becomes richer when we recognise the hand of God moving through everything. Life becomes a celebration when we realise that each morning is commanded by Him, each blessing deliberately given, each breath a quiet miracle waiting to be acknowledged.

The sun felt different today. Almost personal. Almost attentive. A companion with a glowing presence that waits for its cue to lift itself above the horizon. Scripture reminds us that God is the One who commands the sun and the One who commands the morning. Job chapter thirty eight verse twelve carries a question that humbles the soul. Have you commanded the morning since your days began? It holds a gentle reminder that dawn does not appear because of our efforts. It stands at attention for the voice of God alone. And Job chapter nine verse seven declares that the sun rises and sets by His authority. The stars remain in place because He holds them.

“He commands the sun and it does not rise. He seals up the stars.”

This is so beautifully written— reminds me of one of my favorite prayers “the canticle of the creatures” by Francis of Assisi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canticle_of_the_Sun
