Four Tips to Maintain Good Eye Health Work from Home
Because work from home professionals need to take care of their eyes.
If you work from home, it’s essential to maintain good eye health. Working from home can make it more tempting to work longer hours, especially if you’re working on a project you want to complete right away. This means you might spend long hours at your computer or in front of other digital screens. This puts more strain on your eyes. This article will provide some tips to help maintain good eye health while working from home.
Watch what you eat.
Maintaining good eye health isn’t any different from keeping any other part of your body healthy. You need to eat a healthy balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fat — especially omega-3 fatty acids. Vitamin A and the nutrients lutein and zeaxanthin are very important for eye health because they help protect your eyes from harmful high-energy light waves like ultraviolet rays.
Some of the eye-related problems they can help with are macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, eye detachment, and uveitis. These nutrients can be found in green leafy vegetables, orange juice, honeydew melon, kiwis, red peppers, squash, and grapes.
Take breaks regularly and make the most of your screen time.
Close your eyes for a few seconds every 15 to 20 minutes. Wash your face or massage the muscles around your eyes every two hours. Instead of rubbing your eyes with your hands, blink if your eyes feel dry.
If your job requires a lot of screens time, make the most of it by learning a new skill, or practice a new workout routine. This is a good way to restrict your computer time. It can also help you concentrate on other tasks later. Other ways you can be productive in front of a computer screen include:
- Organizing your smartphone.
- Choosing one project you’ve got on your plate and spending 10 minutes brainstorming about it.
- Updating your online passwords every so often. This is a great way to kill time on a slow afternoon.
- Upgrade your inbox by downloading some Google Labs like Canned Responses and Auto-Advance.
- Unsubscribing from 10 newsletters you receive but don’t read.
- Spending a few minutes renaming and organizing your files. Your future self will thank you for this one!
- Outsourcing a task you don’t want to do, such as grocery shopping, tinkering with a PowerPoint presentation, or something else.
- Buy good quality blue-light blocking glasses.
Blue light from screens can be hard on your eyes, especially if you’re exposed to it for long periods of time. Blue-light blocking glasses, also called computer glasses, have become more popular to relieve the effects of digital eye pressure.
These glasses usually have a light yellow tint to them. This neutralizes blue light and reduces eyestrain and eye damage.
You should also use them when you’re on a tablet or laptop late at night before bedtime. This is because looking at blue light late at night can make it hard to fall asleep.
Connect with family and pets.
Spend some time with your family and pets. This allows you to connect with them and gives you a break from your computer. When you’re spending time with them, make sure you’re in the moment and not thinking about the projects you should be working on instead. Try playing indoor games that will keep your mind and body occupied.
These are just a few ways you can maintain good eye health when you work from home. None of these alone will guarantee you’ll never have any eye problems, but if you work on one of these at a time, you’ll reduce the possibility of having eye problems later in your life.

I have been offsetting macular degeneration by gazing at landscapes throughout the day, very helpful!
