Fatwa Issued Against Actor-Politician Vijay Over Iftar Controversy

Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay, a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu’s entertainment and political landscapes, recently hosted an Iftar party that has since drawn significant attention. Held on March 8 at the YMCA Grounds in Chennai, the event was positioned as a gesture of goodwill and communal unity. However, the gathering quickly turned controversial, leading to the issuance of a religious fatwa by a Muslim cleric from Uttar Pradesh.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat and Chief Mufti of Chashme Shariat, issued a fatwa against Vijay following the Iftar. According to the cleric, the event allegedly included individuals described as alcoholics and gamblers, which he argued was disrespectful to Islamic practices and the sanctity of the Ramadan observance.

The fatwa labeled Vijay as "anti-Muslim" and cited his past film portrayals, particularly his role in the film Beast, as examples of negative stereotyping. Maulana Razvi suggested that Vijay’s previous work linked Muslims to terrorism, which, combined with the controversy surrounding the Iftar event, contributed to the decision to issue the fatwa.

"Vijay Thalapathy is using Muslim sentiments to make his way into politics from the film world, while his history is full of anti-Muslim sentiment," Maulana Razvi stated.

The fatwa further urged the Muslim community in Tamil Nadu to refrain from inviting Vijay to any religious events or associating with him in a religious context. The cleric’s statements were echoed by members of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, a local religious organization that filed a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner.

Syed Kous, treasurer of the Sunnat Jamath, explained to the media that the Iftar was poorly managed and included attendees who did not observe Islamic practices. According to the complaint, these individuals “insulted Muslims” by their conduct, which was deemed inappropriate for such a sacred occasion.

“Legal action should be taken against Vijay to ensure that this does not happen again,” Kous asserted.

Vijay, known for his massive fan following and rising political ambitions through his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has not yet issued an official response. However, the event itself included several symbolic gestures aimed at fostering inclusivity. Vijay participated in the evening namaz, wore a skull cap, and broke his fast with attendees. These actions were interpreted by supporters as genuine efforts to connect with the Muslim community.

Still, political reactions added fuel to the debate. Former Tamil Nadu BJP state president K. Annamalai questioned Vijay’s sincerity, citing his roles in movies that depicted alcohol and smoking, and criticized what he perceived as a superficial attempt to appeal to minority voters.

“Nothing will change just by wearing a skull cap for a day and hosting an Iftar event,” Annamalai remarked, emphasizing that consistent character and respect for values matter more than symbolic gestures.

This controversy highlights the challenges public figures face when navigating religious and cultural spaces, especially in the context of political aspirations. It also underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity and the potential backlash that can arise when actions are perceived as performative or inauthentic.

While the Iftar event was likely intended as a step toward inclusiveness and communal harmony, the mixed reactions reveal deep-seated tensions and the heightened scrutiny faced by celebrities entering political arenas. Whether this incident will impact Vijay’s political trajectory remains to be seen, but it serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with public life.

As of now, community leaders, supporters, and political observers continue to weigh in, and the public awaits further clarity from Vijay or his party.
