Exploring Different Publishing Options

Traditional, Self-Publishing, and Hybrid Routes

By Elise L. BlakePublished 3 years ago 3 min read

For writers looking to publish their novel one of the most crucial decisions to make is going to be which route of publication they which to take. This isn't to say that there is a right choice and a wrong choice, it's just going to change a few things when it comes to getting your book into the hands of readers.

So what's really the difference in these types of publishing? Well, let's find out.

Traditional Publishing

Traditional publishing is as it seems, the type that's the more long-established route where you submit your manuscript to literary agents and publishers who - after accepting - handle the publication process from there.

As with all of these publication methods, there are pros and cons.

The advantages of traditional publishing include having access to established distribution networks, professional editing and design services, and potential marketing support. However, the downsides can include the length it can take to go from acceptance to publication and lower paying loyalty rates compared to self-publishing,

Self Publishing

Self-publishing is the DIY version of getting your book into the hands of readers and as the title makes you aware it really is a do-it-all-yourself kind of thing. You as the writer will be responsible for editing, cover design, distribution, and marketing.

However, the advantages include flexibility, faster publication, and higher royalties rates.

This last one is a bit of give and take because yes you may be making more in royalties at the end of the day, but there was no advance to pay for the editing, cover design, and marketing that will need to be paid for before your book even sees a store shelf.

Hybrid Publishing

Hybrid publishing is that sweet spot in the middle of traditional and self-publishing where the author puts the money upfront as they do with self-publishing, but have the advantage of higher royalty rates and access to better distribution services than they could do on their own.

The author becomes more like a partner in the publishing process than someone at the whims of the publishing company.

When deciding on a publishing route, authors should consider several factors:

Creative Control: Determine how much creative control you want to have with aspects such as cover design, editing, and marketing strategies.

Timeline: Assess your timeline goals and the desired speed of publication.

Marketing and Promotion: Evaluate the level of marketing and promotional support you seek from a publisher and your own willingness to engage in marketing efforts. You will always have to do some of this on your own, especially as a first-time author.

Distribution and Reach: Consider the reach and accessibility of distribution channels offered by different publishing routes.

Financial Considerations: Understand the financial implications, including upfront costs, royalty rates, and potential returns on investment.

--

Choosing the right publishing route is a highly personal decision that depends on your goals, preferences, and the specific needs of your manuscript. It's essential to do thorough research, seek advice from industry professionals, and weigh the pros and cons of each route. Additionally, networking with fellow authors and attending writing conferences can provide valuable insights and experiences from those who have already navigated the publishing waters.

---

No matter which option you choose it needs to be the one that you are happy with at the end of the day because at the end of that day, that's the most important part.

Best of luck and keep on writing.

With love,

B. King. xo xo
