Creating a Life Together

Moving, Getting Engaged, Getting Back to Hobbies

By Jessica MariePublished about a year ago 3 min read

I’m back after a nine and half month hiatus of sorts. It was not intentional, but sometimes life has a way of creeping up on you.

On New Year’s Eve, when David and I were at a New Year’s Eve Party at his friend Ryan’s house, David announced that I was moving into his house at the end of March 2024. Justin, Myranda, Devon, and the few others who knew us well weren’t surprised and congratulated us. I had just met Ryan and his dad that evening, and they congratulated us all the same. Ryan thought I seemed kind, he thought we were a cute couple and didn’t doubt that we’d be okay living together.

While New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day were full of celebrations and hope for the upcoming move, once January progressed the work began. I slowly moved my belongings into David’s house and made plans on how I would remodel our room that would be in the attic.

Since the walk in closet was big enough to be a scrapbooking and craft room, I decided once we cleaned out the closet of old junk, I’d paint it and would put in shelving units. David loved that idea and there was another space in our room that he could turn into an entertainment area.

At the end of February, with my tax refund, I bought the paints to paint our room and my scrapbook area. David agreed we could have an accent wall in our room, which we chose a ruby red colour. The other walls would be a sandy pink. I chose a lavender for my scrapbook room.

I started painting our room on 2 March 2024. I painted the accent wall first and it was a messy process. By the time I finished painting the accent wall, I was covered in ruby red paint. David looked at me, smiled, and said he had something for me in his car. It was raining outside, but we made it to his car and he had a gift bag.

He took out a box, then a lock and key bracelet, then asked me, “will you marry me?” Of course, I said yes. He couldn’t afford a ring at that moment, but that was okay and the bracelet was beautiful. I was covered in ruby red paint, and yet the moment was perfect.

I moved in on 23 March 2024 and most of my furniture wouldn’t fit into our attic bedroom. I had to send it back to my parents and buy need furniture that fits. I’m still saving up for a dresser, and clothes still remain a bit unpacked six months later.

The house needs work and this past summer was hot. It was too hot to clean the closet and David finally got it cleaned out two weeks ago. We had pests, had to get an exterminator in, and I’m thinking about getting the storage carts for my scrapbook room first. I’ll paint in the winter.

David re-proposed with a ring at the end of August in one of our favourite tea rooms. While our relationship has been a bit of roller coaster, while our life has been a roller coaster, I don’t want to spend it with anyone else and neither does he.

Moving in has been an adjustment, but those are the growing pains we all face as we become adults. I’m preparing for an engagement party, then a wedding in 2025. It’s going to be a busy year, but we will face it together.

I hope to post more often, but life has been busy and I’ve been crafting a lot more when I’m not busy. I’m starting to get back into writing, and writing about this experience.
