COVID-19 updates on the first confirmed case of the omicron form in the United States, which was discovered in California.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — It was only a matter of time before it was proven, and now it has.

The first known case of the omicron variety has been discovered in the United States, only days after its fast spread in South Africa sparked global concern, according to US officials.

The California and San Francisco Departments of Public Health determined that omicron was to blame for a recent incidence of COVID-19 discovered on a city resident. The individual was a fully vaccinated traveler who returned from South Africa on November 22. The variation was confirmed by genome sequencing at the University of California, San Francisco.

At a White House press briefing, presidential adviser Anthony Fauci remarked, "We knew it was only a matter of time before the first case of omicron would be found in the United States."

At a press conference, Dr. Grant Colfax, head of San Francisco's Department of Public Health, claimed the infected person had moderate symptoms and had recovered. He noted the person had received the entire Moderna vaccination regimen but not the booster shot. So far, close contacts have been informed and have tested negative.

Colfax, like President Joe Biden earlier last week, said the finding of omicron is a cause for alarm but not panic, despite the fact that he believes omicron is more contagious than the delta variety.

Although the severity of the illness caused by omicron and its capacity to evade vaccine-induced protection are unknown, Colfax said that the specialists he contacted felt that vaccination will continue to be a vital part of the fight against the variation.

"So our message is the same as yesterday," he explained. "If you haven't been vaccinated, be vaccinated for gods sakes if you haven't already." If you're eligible, get your booster. Continue to use your masks inside if necessary."

Fauci also echoed the Biden administration's demand for unvaccinated Americans to get vaccinations and for those who have been vaccinated to obtain boosters, describing both as "the solution to this problem."

About 37% of the eligible population in the United States, including 29% of adults, are not completely vaccinated.

When asked if Americans should adjust their holiday plans, Fauci stated that those who have been vaccinated should feel safe not wearing a mask if they are gathering indoors with other vaccinated people. When in a public situation where the vaccination status of others is unknown, however, Fauci advises wearing a mask. He explained, "That's what I do."

The CDC, which recently increased surveillance at four international airports – JFK in New York and Newark in New Jersey, as well as those in San Francisco and Atlanta – said it has been preparing for the arrival of omicron and noted that the delta variant remains the most common strain in the country.

"We will continue to collaborate with other U.S. and international public health and industrial partners to learn more (about omicron)," the CDC stated in a statement.

In a tweet, California Governor Gavin Newsom said it's safe to presume the variation has spread across the country.

"There is no need to be alarmed, but we must remain watchful," Newsom added. "That indicates you should be immunized." Get a boost. Indoors, use a mask."

Experts had warned that the variation was likely already in circulation in the United States in the days leading up to the announcement.

Fauci praised the Biden administration's decision to impose travel restrictions from eight African nations, including South Africa, in order to slow the spread of the strain in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Department of State have upped their alert levels for the region, advising against travel.

Despite the quick response to the news of omicron, cases have arisen.
