Amazon has canceled its Wheel of Time series

Wheel of Time Amazon Cancelled: When the Wheel Stops Turning

By Omasanjuwa OgharandukunPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

After three seasons, Amazon’s live-action take on Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s Wheel of Time series is coming to an end.

Though The Wheel of Time’s third season was hailed by fans as the show’s strongest chapter yet, Deadline reports that Amazon has decided not to bring it back due to its relatively high production costs and flagging viewership numbers. Similar to Amazon’s Rings of Power series, The Wheel of Time was clearly a play to produce another Game of Thrones-style hit. When the series first debuted in 2021, it managed to capture an impressively large audience and become one of Amazon’s most-watched programs. But those numbers dwindled in subsequent seasons, leading Amazon to call it quits.

“In the grand tapestry of storytelling, some threads are cut before their time, leaving patterns incomplete and hearts yearning for closure.”

The Rise of a Fantasy Epic

In 2021, Amazon Prime Video unveiled The Wheel of Time, a high-fantasy series adapted from Robert Jordan's acclaimed novels. With Rosamund Pike leading as Moiraine Damodred, the show promised a rich narrative woven with magic, prophecy, and complex characters. Its debut was met with enthusiasm, quickly becoming one of Prime Video's top five series launches.

The Unexpected Halt

Despite its initial success, Amazon announced in May 2025 that The Wheel of Time would not return for a fourth season. The decision, attributed to high production costs and declining viewership, shocked fans and industry observers alike. Season 3, which premiered in March 2025, had received a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for its storytelling and production quality.

Fan Outcry and Industry Implications

The cancellation sparked a wave of disappointment among the show's dedicated fanbase. Social media platforms were flooded with expressions of frustration and campaigns to save the series. Many viewers felt the story had just begun to find its stride, making the abrupt end all the more disheartening.

Industry analysts noted that the show's termination reflects broader trends in streaming services, where high-budget productions are increasingly scrutinized for their return on investment. The decision to cancel The Wheel of Time underscores the challenges faced by fantasy series in maintaining consistent viewership to justify their costs.

The Legacy Continues

While the television adaptation has concluded, the world of The Wheel of Time persists through its extensive literary works and a passionate global fan community. Discussions about potential continuations, whether through other media formats or platforms, continue to circulate. For now, the series stands as a testament to the complexities of adapting expansive fantasy narratives in the modern entertainment landscape.

The Express Tribune

“As the wheel turns, stories begin and end, but their echoes linger, reminding us of the worlds we've visited and the journeys we've undertaken.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter back in April right after The Wheel of Time’s third season concluded, showrunner Rafe Judkins said that when when he and his team were first shopping the series around to studios, they ultimately chose Amazon as a production partner because it “felt like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term.”

“There are not a lot of places doing that anymore,” Judkins said. “For Wheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave.”

Comment By User Mataybara:

This is and will always be the fault of rafe judkins and the people who ran the show.

The wheel of time was written as a story for tv. It was easily adaptable. Do the books have their flaws absolutely. Are they huge absolutely. But the core of the stories were very easy to adapt.

The books have sold 100 million COPIES!!!

This was a story with a huge built in fan base.

But the decision to radically change the story ..change the focus of the story from rand mat and Perrin to make rosamund pike the star, and to change so many plot points turned off the book fans. Which would've been a key component of the shows success. Then the fact that the show runners didn't bother to lay the foundation for the main storyline prior to season 1 meant that new viewers were lost as to why they should care. Then creating stupid emotional plot points to try and make people care about the characters never rang true. These were the things wrong with the show. Even season 3 ..which was head and shoulders above the 1st 2 seasons had unnecessary changes to the story.

Ultimately the biggest mistake was on rafe judkins and Harriet mcdougal.

They pitched something to Amazon that was not the wheel of time. And that killed any chance they had to be successful.

Judkins is an idiot..but why mcdougal allowed her husband's legacy to be butchered will forever be a mystery and travesty .
