"Air"

A Must Watch Movie... Now playing in theaters...

By There is Something...Published 3 years ago 3 min read

Ben Affleck’s “Air” is a movie about the iconic shoe that is named after the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. The film captures the story of how Nike, a running shoe company at the time, successfully recruited Jordan and built a sneaker empire that would change the world of sports and fashion. While the outcome of the story is already known, the movie manages to keep the audience engaged and entertained with its strong writing, veteran performers, and behind-the-scenes craftspeople.

The infectious energy of the man at the center of the film, Sonny Vaccaro, is what gives “Air” its life. As the Nike recruiting expert who recognized Jordan’s talent and pursued him relentlessly, Vaccaro is portrayed by Matt Damon. Damon and Affleck, who co-wrote and starred in “Good Will Hunting,” share the screen once again, playing off each other as longtime friends and colleagues. Affleck plays Phil Knight, the co-founder and former CEO of Nike, who is an intriguing mix of Zen calm and corporate arrogance.

The film takes place in 1984, and Nike’s basketball division is an afterthought within the Oregon-based running shoe company. Vaccaro, a middle-aged bulldog in various Members Only jackets, knows Jordan can change all that and spends most of the film convincing everyone around him of that notion. The cast includes Jason Bateman as the director of marketing, Chris Tucker as a player-turned-executive, Chris Messina as Jordan’s swaggering agent, and Viola Davis as Jordan’s proud and protective mother. Character actor Matthew Maher stands out as Nike’s idiosyncratic shoe design guru, Peter Moore.

The heart of “Air” is a timeless underdog story of grit, dreams, and moxie. In that spirit, Vaccaro delivers a killer monologue at a crucial moment in hopes of sealing the deal with Jordan. Affleck shrewdly never shows us Jordan full-on, instead keeping him as an elusive idea. However, an intoxicating bit of crosscutting reveals the legacy he’ll leave over time.

While the story itself is captivating, the film’s evocation of the mid-1980s can be heavy-handed at times. Affleck aims to create nostalgia with nearly wall-to-wall needle drops and overbearing pop culture references. While some of the references are subtle and amusing, others feel random and distracting. Nonetheless, this is a minor quibble about a movie that is as smooth and reliable as one of Jordan’s buzzer-beating, fadeaway jumpers.

“Air” is a film about process, about people who are good at their jobs, and it succeeds in capturing the spirit of those working in offices, conference rooms, and production labs. The movie is a testament to the power of perseverance and how one idea, one person, can change the course of history. It is an enjoyable and entertaining ride that is sure to delight fans of sports, fashion, and cinema alike.

In conclusion, it is clear that there are a multitude of factors that contribute to a person's success. While some may argue that intelligence and talent are the most important factors, research suggests that other qualities such as hard work, perseverance, and resilience are just as crucial. Moreover, success is not solely determined by individual characteristics, but also by external factors such as social support, access to resources, and systemic inequalities. It is important to acknowledge and address these factors in order to create a more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Furthermore, it's worth noting that success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. What success means to one person may differ from what it means to another. Therefore, it is important to define success on your own terms, rather than simply conforming to society's narrow definition of success. Ultimately, success is about achieving your goals, living a fulfilling life, and making a positive impact on the world in your own unique way.
