“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” — Zig Ziglar

And the best time to start is right when you open your eyes! Maintaining a healthy morning routine can vastly improve your productivity.

The problem with me was my addicting distractions. I wasn't starting my day in an optimal way, so I was less productive and more distracted.

I had to reshape my morning routine.

“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” — John C. Maxwell

But how do you change something that you do for years?

You Take Aggressive Action

Creating a morning ritual that improves productivity needs planning first. You gotta write down what keeps you back. As you do that you can find ways to block that distraction from getting in your way to productivity.

Let’s assume that your problem is like mine. Social media.

I like to interact on social media, follow people, talk with them, etc. After all, I’m trying to build my self-brand on Medium at the moment. Sometimes I do it more than intended though.

I get distracted and I spend many more minutes on social media right when I wake up.

I needed to remove that distraction from my daily morning routine.

Now, aggressive action means getting out of your comfort zone. Shake yourself in order to do what you want in an optimal way.

I took my phone, put the alarm clock on, closed WiFi, and put it in the hallway.

I have to wake up every day and immediately leave the bed in order to turn off the alarm. While having WiFi off, I also have zero notifications.

I gained time for my morning routine.

Now, adding new elements to my morning routine to be more productive.

1. Complete a daily task

When I wake up, I make my bed. It’s the simplest of tasks. The outcome is much better than you think of. You are achieving something. Even if it’s small you’ll get a sense of completion.

2. Moving my body

I tried to find an exercise in order to get my body moving in its entirety. You don’t need any equipment to do this one, so you have no excuses!

And what is better for you to get going than burpees? Burpees provide some serious benefits to your well-being in general.

  • Extra Focus in the Morning — Getting your heart rate up and breathing hard for just a minute will jolt your mind and body awake.
  • Little Stronger, Little More Cardio, Little More Flexibility — Burpees tax the legs, core, and upper body for a little strength boost. You will challenge your cardio even in one minute. The Burpee push away at the bottom is a good stretch for your lower back to start your day.
  • Metabolic Boost — Anytime you increase your heart rate and oxygen consumption you’re revving up your metabolism and Burpees never fail in that regard.
  • Happy Brain to Combat Stress — That post-workout ‘runner’s high’ doesn’t require a marathon running or weightlifting session. You can get a little dopamine boost in a minute plus a feeling of pride at starting off your day conquering a physical challenge.

I’m doing so much research for burpees that I feel I need some sort of degree just for them!

3. Healthy breakfast

I’m pretty sure you are already aware of which meal is the most important in your day. Yes, you guessed right. It’s your breakfast!

I aim for a lot of energy — as I am about to write for the whole morning. This writing routine is exhausting and you know it better than anybody else.

I eat oats, bananas, raisins, and walnuts. All mixed up in a great smoothie.

Sometimes I choose eggs instead. A safe option to get choline and B12. Vital to get your brain going.

4. Music

Now, it can be anything for you. A podcast or the news. Either way, you need to have something playing in the background. Keeping you engaged and maybe sometimes even giving you ideas about your next story.

For me, listening to any type of music helps me much more than you believe.

  1. I’m slowly mastering the English language.
  2. I get my mood up when the rhythm is funky.
  3. I get ideas from the lyrics.
  4. It’s a great time spender.

I play the guitar also, so music is pretty much my life.

If you can’t relate with me here, find something that keeps you as engaged as music engages me.

Takeaway

A great morning routine is vital to keep you productive for the day.

You need to remove from your morning what keeps you distracted.

I maintain a healthy morning routine by doing 4 simple tasks every day.

  1. Make my bed
  2. Exercise
  3. Eat a great breakfast
  4. Listening to music

There you have it. The morning ritual keeps me from being unproductive. The morning ritual helps me write 2 articles per day before lunch.

The fun fact is that it’s much easier than any other routine I tried to apply in my morning. It’s easy to follow, it has so few steps, and you can start it today. Basically tomorrow as you already woke up...duh! My title is deceiving, right??
