Letter of Intent (that was never sent)

by: the ADHD Accountant - Krid

A take to provide some material for my partner, and to remind her how I see her. Obviously this does not meet her school's format and requirements. Of which, in my opinion, are neither sufficiently clear nor informed by an adequate example. Post graduate work shouldn't be guesswork as to what format you are looking for. So, I just wrote some stuff off the cuff (and from the heart) to cheer her up. If some of this meagre prose is useful then great.

On a side note, before we get to the main text of this post and the point, bravo/a to any and all who go back to school later in life. To those who turn their lives around and bend over backwards to meet all expectations, and then surpass them. It isn't easy. It isn't cheap. It isn't for nothing. And, it isn't not noticed.

And, as we here in Canada are celebrating our Thanksgiving holiday, I would like to post a little bit about gratitude; to those counsellors and mentors who along the way have provided me so much aid and support. Behavioural therapy, physiotherapy, nurses, techs, and all the others who along the way have fostered growth. Those who have patched wounds and mitigated trauma. My life was saved, and my successes made easier by their efforts. I am very proud to support and assist my partner further her goals to provide that to others. There's a video on YouTube, we call it the 'not about the nail' video. Here's to all of you who can help with the nail, and all those who know when it isn't about the nail - and can still help!

NOW THE LETTER -

I write as a supplicant for the Master of Counseling program through the :::::::. As someone who has struggled to break the bonds of abuse and raise strong, independent children I recognize all those along the way who provided assistance and support. I feel now more strongly than ever that my passion and calling are to pass on those lessons most harshly learned, and the aid I received to those who are now where I was.

Through working on a ::::::: diploma as a shift worker in a steel plant to earning my Bachelor of Arts in Justice from ::::::: while working full time as a Legal Assistant, I have found that family, community, and social workers of all stripes can enable a single mother to accomplish more than ever dreamed of when fleeing with two small children, an old car, and whatever can be packed into the trunk in just a few minutes. It is in that vein that I have, in numerous ways, sought to provide to those less fortunate in our community.

Student, Legal Assistant, Mediator, Volunteer Board Member, Mentor, Coach, Tutor, Care Provider, Mother, Partner, Friend; these are all roles and titles I have embraced over the last 12 years, developing self-awareness to understand myself, listening to learn from others the lessons they have and to hear their stories. To foster with compassion an encouraging environment where empathy and open mindedness create flexible systems to patiently, and discretely, support those in need - clients.

Leaving taught me that I have the strength to persevere. Shift work taught me to manage my time and limited resources. A Diploma taught me how to listen, and study. Being a Legal Assistant taught me about the judiciary, and about assisting customers and stakeholders. A Bachelors taught me how to research, and report. My clients taught me how to help them; but they have also shown me how little I truly know.

I am seeking this Masters to increase my abilities to aid my community, to temper my experience with the knowledge of centuries of research and practice. As my family grows and matures I want more flexibility in my schedule, and to increase the resources at my disposal to continue to support them and follow my hearts calling.

Thank-you,

:::::::
