A DAY IN THE LIFE

Nigerian Student Edition

By Sylvia NnuekwePublished 2 years ago 4 min read

Hi everyone, before i get into anything it is only common courtesy that I introduce myself. My name is Sylvia, I'm nineteen years old, an undergraduate studying Public Health (in my third year currently) and well as you probably already know...a Nigerian. I have to say, this is my first time in years deciding to share my story anywhere else besides my diary, I am not really the outspoken one in my family so it's understandable that i only keep to myself right? Anyways, I am very passionate about writing but unfortunately not very good at it so pardon me if I make some mistakes, for a very long time I always dreamed of being a famous author, my favorite genres to write on then was romance and adventure and I very well almost always mixed the two together, I preferred putting my stories into comic form and so my first "book" was titled 'Island Bliss' and it was just basically about this girl and this guy in the same school, they were attacked by high school shooters during prom and the girl's boyfriend was shot, she was devastated and hesitant to leave him but she did and fled to a nearby dock, she jumped on a boat out of panic and the guy I spoke about earlier got in with her. When it felt safe they decided to row back but they got caught up in a storm and well was washed ashore a deserted strange island. I would love to go on and on about the story but i already feel like I'm boring you all so I will skip ahead.

I am sure you are all wondering why I decided to write about my story, I haven't exactly decided if i want this to be an everyday thing or not but I feel very strongly about sharing some notable experiences in my life from this day forward because I have a very peculiar lifestyle, whereas I do not decide most of what happens but they just do and they are very well entertaining and worth sharing. Of course sharing what happens won't come without my thoughts and feelings and some of it may be either dark, sad, relatable or hilarious depending on your sense of humor so I will be giving trigger warnings when needed. Today is the 4th of September, it is currently 10:30am and cold as balls here in Abuja, after not coming to work all through last week due to health issues I was informed that if I was not able to make it today then my logbook would not be signed. The women at my workplace are way more brutal than the men, I reckon it is because of their workplace environment or they are just some mean ass women out for blood. It isn't uncommon for students to be treated like crap here despite the fact that we are diligent and follow the rules to the best of our ability, what is even worse for me is the fact that I hate being noticed or singled out from the crowd but that is always what happens to me because my mom doesn't allow me go to work as often as I should while the others hop in at least three times a week so by the time I manage to show up, I am already labelled as 'lazy' and 'unserious' and even after explaining myself genuinely, they are hell bent on making this period of Internship more stressful than it already is.

Just a while back about two weeks ago, I volunteered to be a Medical staff at an ICT camp for ten days so even though I was in town I wasn't really able to go to work because well I was the only one in my unit and these tweenagers were falling ill more than I expected, it was quite overwhelming. After the camp concluded, I ran to work to plead to be signed and I explained as soon as I got there but the man did not believe me and was sort of trying to manipulate me to falsely admit that I was lying. I wasn't shocked but saying I was pissed would be an understatement. However, I was desperate so even though I didn't go along with whatever he thought of my explanation, I was forced to resort to begging until he finally agreed but this didn't come without a mild scolding and I rolled my eyes accordingly because...shut up bro. The same attitude was applied to the woman today because not only was I given all the work to do as 'punishment', she also delayed me when i was supposed to leave and kept my neighbor that was supposed to pick me up waiting and unfortunately I will be in her unit until the thirteenth(13).

Needless to say, it feels really good to write about all this, I want you all to share in my experience and if you can, tell me about your experiences as well, let's get it off our chest. Until then!
