6 Tools to Maximize Your Freelance Career

In order to have a successful freelance career, you must have the right tools at your disposal

I'm sure you've heard the expression “Work smarter, not harder.” In the world of freelancing, this is especially true. Sometimes, it's easier to work really hard on something that doesn't need much effort. For example, you could spend hours to write a blog post when you could spend 10 minutes writing an email that gets results just as well. Freelancing is all about working smart and maximizing what you have at your disposal in order to be successful—and these tools will help!

1. Professionalism

Professionalism is one of the most important things to think about when you're working on a new project. It can make or break your reputation as a freelancer, so it's important to keep in mind why professionalism matters:

  • To show that you're a professional. People will be more likely to hire you if they know that they can count on your work being delivered on time and at the highest quality possible.
  • To show that you are a team player who cares about their needs first and foremost, no matter how big or small those needs may be.
  • To show that you are an effective leader who knows how to get things done efficiently while still maintaining high standards of quality control

2. Time management

Time management is important for freelancers. If you are not managing your time effectively, you will find it difficult to meet deadlines and complete assignments on time. While there are lots of apps out there that can help with this, here are some of the best tools for managing your schedule:

  • Toggl – This is a Chrome extension that lets you track how much time you spend doing each task during a day or week. It also has features like an activity chart and estimates on how long tasks will take (based on historical data). You can set reminders as well so that you don't forget any important deadlines!
  • Trello – This web-based app lets users organize their projects into boards, lists, cards and comments in order to manage them more effectively. It's designed for teams but works just as well when used solo!

3. Dedication

If you're like me, then staying focused and motivated is a challenge. Staying on task can be hard enough in a traditional 9-5 job, but when you're working for yourself, it's even harder. The temptation to procrastinate or give up altogether is even greater because there are no office politics or deadlines to keep you on track. So how do you stay dedicated? Here are some tips:

  • Keep a schedule! When I'm working from home, my productivity drops if I don't have some kind of routine in place to keep myself organized and focused on the task at hand. It helps if your schedule varies throughout the day so that you aren't stuck doing something monotonous all day long (like data entry). This can also prevent burnout by providing variety throughout the week/month/year.
  • Limit distractions! Whether they're social media sites like Facebook or Snapchat (which tend to be more popular with younger generations), games like Candy Crush Saga (yes--even though it's mindless fun), or just general time-wasters like Netflix binging sessions

4. Communication

Communication is the cornerstone of any successful freelance career, but it's not just about talking. It's also about listening!

You must be able to listen closely to your clients, who will often have needs and requests that you can't anticipate. You'll also want to keep an ear open for feedback from other freelancers in the community so that you can learn new skills and improve your workflow. And you'll need to be open-minded when it comes time to collaborate with your team members on projects or discuss potential client opportunities. This may mean being quiet at times while others speak up, but it will pay off in the long run by making everyone feel heard and valued.

Now that we've discussed what communication looks like from both sides (client/freelancer), let's explore some practical tips for improving your communication skills:

  • Be professional at all times—both in writing and over phone/video calls—and use proper grammar when possible; avoid jargon unless it's absolutely necessary because it might confuse non-technical people unfamiliar with industry lingo; always double-check spelling before sending anything out into the world through email or other channels such as Slack chats!
  • Avoid getting too personal with clients unless they indicate otherwise (e..g., by telling stories about themselves). In addition, try not sharing details about yourself unless asked directly; instead focus on providing value through quality work rather than self-promotion alone (though don't shy away completely if someone asks).

5. Collaboration

The fifth tool you need is collaboration. You can't go it alone in this world, and freelancing is no exception. Collaboration is key to success when it comes to freelance careers—and here's why:

  • It allows you to learn new things. When you work with someone else, they may teach you something that will help improve your skillset or create more opportunities for yourself in the future.
  • It gives you access to new clients and projects beyond what would have been possible before collaborating with them; knowing who else is out there and what they're doing is a great way for finding new clients and jobs on your own (more on how later).
  • Working with others will make it easier for them come back through referrals because of their pleasant experiences working with each other before – whether those referrals were made directly by word-of-mouth or indirectly through social media posts/ads promoting how awesome everyone was at working together during recent projects!

6. Drive and passion

  • Drive and passion

Drive and passion are what will push you to succeed. These two qualities are also the ones that keep you going when times get tough, or when risk-taking doesn’t pay off right away. When everything else is failing around you, drive and passion will be there as a reminder of why it's all worth it in the end. It's these qualities that make people successful—and if you don't have them, then success may seem like an unreachable goal for now.
