Making a mistake at your 9-5 might mean you lose your job.

But making a mistake in the entrepreneurial world means you learn, grow and drive on.

However, that doesn't mean you need to actively pursue mistake-making. In fact, quite the contrary. Knowing where the pitfalls and turbulence lie will help you avoid simple mistakes and a loss of precious time.

Especially the mistakes that are easily avoidable and can destroy your success.

The following are six common mistakes every new entrepreneur should be aware of and avoid.

Letting fear and lack of information prevent you from taking action

Fear is only natural for a new entrepreneur.

You're on a new path. You're blazing a new trail. And you're doing something that scares the pants off most "normal" folks.

In fact, it is likely something you won't ever be able to shake as a business will always be inconsistent.

Waiting to take action until you believe you have all the information will keep you behind your competition. You can't possibly expect yourself to know all the answers or be perfect. But, the more you take action, the more you will learn and perfect your skills.

So don't let fear stop you; let it fuel you.

Over planning or suffering from analysis paralysis

If you ask 100 "experts" the best way to start or solve an issue, you'll get 100 different answers.

Too much information or over-planning can also prevent you from seeing the results you need to be a successful entrepreneur.

Again, you can't expect yourself to know everything. This means you will never have the perfect plan. Most plans you'll learn to adjust on the fly.

It's a fact of the startup world, so don't overthink it.

Just go get it.

Have a poor understanding of your target audience

You'll totally miss the mark if you don't understand your target audience.

And when you miss the mark, you don't provide the real value that your clients and customers need.

Value is essential to building a successful business. It's simple, without some kind of value, you won't acquire revenue.

So don't skip doing the research. Makes sure you research your audience and understand them. This includes asking for direct feedback any time you can.

A lack of focus, business goals, and objectives

If you skip a business plan, you might miss your goal of being a successful entrepreneur.

Now that being said, there's absolutely no need for an extended, drawn-out, 60-page business plan.

Business plans are designed to help you come up with a viable business. They're supposed to give you a starting map if you will. And they're there to provide you with focus when the journey gets blurry.

Stick to the plan, stay focused, and drive to the goal line.

Ignoring finances and proper marketing

In my first 3 years as a new entrepreneur, I nearly drove the company into the ground by not grasping basic finance principles.

So it's worth knowing that a big reason businesses fail is poor finances and cash flow.

This can easily be solved through proper research and creating a realistic business plan. Not only that but having a basic understanding of your business finances.

If it pains you to look at numbers, like it does me, then hire for the position.

Having a clear understanding of this helps ensure you know what it takes to be successful and what kind of marketing plan you need to reach your goals. Without marketing, you can't expect your target audience to find you or know your business exists.

Taking on all the work yourself

Finally, but certainly not least, doing all the work yourself.

This is an easy mistake as many new entrepreneurs try to save funds. However, realism is how much work you can do in the long run.

Without reaching burnout, you cannot expect yourself to be a business owner, accountant, marketing consultant, content creator, janitor, and virtual assistant for years. Hiring just one person to help you get started or do the tedious work can save you more time and add more money to your pocket.

The final word

Starting a business can be challenging.

There are so many things to do and learn that it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But, if you take these five points to heart, you'll be on your way to entrepreneurial success. Focus on understanding your target audience, taking action and learning as you go, having a clear business plan and focus, and not doing everything yourself.

While these five points are essential, they're not the only things you need to know to be a successful entrepreneur. But they are a great starting point.

Now it's time to get out there and get started on your entrepreneurial journey.

Go get 'em, tiger.
