5 Ways to Manifest Inner Peace
in a soul draining workplace

1. INSERT YOUR PERSONALITY/ INTERESTS WHENEVER OR HOWEVER YOU CAN
A job can really feel like a job. Even if this will not be your profession you want it to feel like your destiny. It should feel like every day you are being fulfilled even if they are making you feel like a cog in a machine. You know you are more. You have to be more. I know you are because I am more. You are more than a body. Your input is valuable. It is necessary and influential. No matter where your workplace is or what your position asks of you, you bring your individualism to your environment. Play the music you like. Smile big or frown purposefully. Personalize your space. Celebrate what you feel is of importance. Display the things/ people that elevate your spirit. Wherever you are your best self, bring that version to the place you hate the most. I guarantee you; you will hate it less. Remember who you were when you got to that workplace. Were you optimistic? Did you have ideas you wanted to add to the organization? Make the jokes that make you laugh the hardest or wait until you get home and laugh about your co-workers with people you like. If you are like me, and you like the people you work with, appreciate them. Take advantage of your lunch time. Talk to them. Not about work but about their life. Be a support. Be a sounding board. Be the real laugh machine. Listen to their stories.

2. USE YOUR TIME
We accumulate time that expires. We are left frustrated because we feel stolen from. Don’t allow them to rob you. Whenever you need to prioritize something in your personal life, prioritize it. Before you feel completely burnt out, call out of work. Let’s say you miss the window of time where you’re not totally overcome by stress and you are in the middle of a tsunami of stress, call out of work then. Do not push through anymore. Take a day to do nothing. Shit take 2 days to do nothing.

3. GO ON VACATION
This is different from using your time randomly to disrupt your routine. This is planning something special for yourself. I am not endorsing going way out of your budget. I am suggesting that you go somewhere you love or somewhere you’ve been meaning to go to. It does not have to be long. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, but you must completely alter your surroundings. You deserve it. Right now, I am on a beach in Honduras and when I tell you I needed to see how blue the sky could be somewhere else. I was desperate to gloss my eyes across the expansiveness of the sea. The deepness of the green of the rainforest was eager to fold over my eyes. GO ON VACATION.

4. VOICE YOUR OPINIONS ON ISSUES WHETHER THOSE IN CHARGE LISTEN OR NOT
It brings solace to have people around you who are likeminded about your shared circumstances. However, it is exhausting have your concerns and complaints live and die in the breakroom. It is crucial to proclaim your feelings and point of view to your supervisor and/or the director of your department/ the Vice President of the company or even the CEO of the company. Your experiences are valid, and you deserve to be heard. Sadly, change does not usually occur rapidly but the relief of getting the thoughts that have been consuming you into the ears of those who hold positions of power is immediate. I would suggest that you do not obsess over the response you get. It may vastly differ from what you expected. It may rest outside the comforting barriers of common sense. Do not be discouraged. Take pride in standing up for yourself and your peers. I would not encourage you to do anything I haven't done myself. Trust me it is worth it.
5. APPLY TO JOBS
This is the last, most important, and most challenging step. When a job is sapping you of energy it often feels like a cell you cannot escape from. To effectively participate in the job search process you need optimism, positivity, and the focus it takes to fill out applications and go on interviews. You might need to call out of work to send out some applications. That is okay. You must do it on your time. Apply when you have taken the time to figure out what you want for yourself. Do not project all your hopes into these perspective new jobs. Be careful to not measure your joy based on being accepted or rejected from a place of business. Be proud of yourself for doing the hard task of putting yourself back in the job search pool. Also remember that old school saying, “the grass is not always greener on the other side.” All your stress will not evaporate, a new work environment will bring new obstacles. Are those new obstacles manageable? Understand what you will and won’t accept at your place of employment. I practice what I preach. I will be calling out of work before the week is out and dedicating time and energy to applying to new positions. I will be careful to make decisions that aid in the betterment of myself.
The last tidbit
If you have a bit of happiness, do not surrender that happiness to the negativity of your current workplace. Hold that happiness closer and tighter than anything or anyone.
