5.8 magnitude quake hits Afghanistan border, tremors felt in Kashmir, Delhi-NCR
Kashmir, Delhi-NCR

April 19, 2025 — Parts of northern India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and the Delhi-NCR area, were rocked by a moderate 5.8-mag earthquake that occurred earlier today close to the Afghanistan border. Residents were alarmed by the earthquake, which struck at around 3:12 PM IST, but as of right now, there have been no reports of significant damage or fatalities.
Epicenter Close to the Hindu Kush Area
The Hindu Kush region of northeastern Afghanistan, a known seismic hotspot, was the epicenter of the earthquake, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor began around 180 kilometers below the surface of the earth, which reduced the possibility of extensive damage but still permitted the shockwaves to travel great distances. The location and magnitude of the earthquake were also confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which also noted that tectonic activity between the Indian and Eurasian plates makes deep-focus earthquakes in this area rather common.

There were tremors in northern India.
Strong tremors lasting 20 to 30 seconds were reported by residents of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and various areas of Jammu and Kashmir. People fled homes and buildings in terror in Srinagar and the surrounding areas; similar incidents were seen in parts of Punjab and Haryana. As a precaution, office workers in Delhi-NCR'shigh-risebuildings were temporarily evacuated.
Shortly after the tremors were felt, social media was ablaze with videos and messages, with many users reporting creaking walls, swaying ceiling fans, and shaking windows.
No Damage Reports Right Away
No serious injuries or damage have been reported by Afghan or Indian authorities. Emergency response units have been placed on alert as a precaution, and local disaster management teams are keeping an eye on the situation.
"We are still conducting checks in sensitive areas, but initial assessments indicate no structural damage or injuries," a Delhi Disaster Management Authority official stated.
The situation is being closely monitored in Kashmir, where the terrain is mountainous and infrastructure is more susceptible. Some public offices and schools were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
Region's Seismic Sensitivity
One of the world's most seismically active regions, the Hindu Kush region regularly experiences moderate to powerful earthquakes. This region is vulnerable to deep-seated seismic events that can be felt throughout much of South and Central Asia due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The area has experienced a number of moderate earthquakes in recent years, but because of their depth and location, the majority have not caused major damage.
Authorities Urge Caution
While there is no tsunami threat or aftershock warning at this time, geologists and disaster response teams are urging residents to remain vigilant. People have been advised to inspect homes and buildings for any visible cracks or structural issues and to follow earthquake safety protocols
As the region continues to grapple with its seismic vulnerability, today’s event serves as a reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure planning.
Stay Safe Tips During an Earthquake:
Drop, cover, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Stay away from windows, mirrors, and heavy furniture.
Do not use elevators.
If outside, move to an open area away from buildings and power lines.
Keep an emergency kit with essentials ready at all times.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, officials emphasized the need for enhanced public awareness and preparedness. Seismologists reiterated that while deep-focus quakes like this are less likely to cause surface-level destruction, they can still pose serious risks in densely populated regions. Residents are encouraged to participate in community disaster drills and keep emergency contacts and supplies readily accessible. Educational institutions across the affected areas have been asked to review their emergency protocols. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department and NCS continue to monitor for aftershocks. Citizens are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading unverified information online Base.
