10 Digital Careers for Creative People

Digital income streams for the creative entrepreneur

By Faith SummerPublished 6 years ago 5 min read

Today there are an abundance of ways to make money online. More and more companies are outsourcing their needs to freelancers. A large number of people are starting digital businesses, and reeling in the cash from their MacBooks. Sounds too good t0 be true, doesn't it? Time freedom. Location freedom. Financial freedom. Who wouldn't want that?

Truthfully though, most people are so fearful to start something new, or invest in themselves, that they pass up the opportunities in front of them.

Being able to make a paycheque no matter where in the world you are is invaluable. It provides a sense of security while simultaneously, a sense of freedom. And there isn't just one way to do it! I am going to outline 10 careers that can be done from anywhere with wifi. However keep in mind these are for creative, driven entrepreneurs who are ready to take their freedom back into their own hands.

10 Online Careers for Creative People

1. Blogger

Since you are reading my blog post right now, naturally it makes sense to start with this one. Did I make money from writing this post? The answer is yes! From tips, reads, links, and more there are tons of income streams one can earn from blogging. If you're passionate about writing, have a unique voice, and fresh outlook you can make a great living blogging.

If you're looking to make some cash from your writing, I highly recommend you check out my recent post 6 Ways I Make Money Blogging.

2. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is recommending products and/or services from another company to your viewers. You include a link to the product which is specifically designed for your audience, so when they buy- you earn.

The big perk of affiliate marketing is you can promote products you're passionate about, while not having the stress of inventory or back-end business hassles. Most companies now have affiliate programs, so do some research into what brand you'd like to work with and their affiliate programs! Imagine repping your fave brands clothes, or being sent free gear for your camping trip- this is totally possible! And lots of people are making it their full time gig.

3. Virtual Assistant

Tons of companies and brands are now hiring virtual assistants! This is good for you if you are a very organized person, can multitask, and like to plan things out. Tasks typically include scheduling, replying to emails, entering data, keeping up with social media, and any other tasks they need your help with. If you love to be a techy go-to then this is for you!

Find VA jobs on Writers Work, Upwork, and even Indeed.

4. Graphic Designer

If you're a highly creative person, and don't that 9-to-5, then this is for you. Graphic design is a huge market right now, and pays as such. If you have a knack for design and detail, consider going into graphic design. Typically pays $56,000 annually, or more if you're in demand.

5. Social Media Manager

Social media is the number one way to make sales today. So obviously, companies want their social medias to be popular and effective. However, many CEOs know it's not their speciality, and pass it on to someone who knows their way around each social platform perfectly. And of course, someone who understands their audience. That person could be you! If you know your way around Twitter and Instagram, then post your skills on a site like Fiverr or Upwork, and set your price. You never know what sort of business you could grow with good reviews, and partnerships.

6. Teaching English Online

Teaching English online is a legitimate way to make money. With companies like VIPkid and GoFluent, it's very possible you could land a teaching job from your couch (or AirBnb in Paris). Some require a degree, most don't. Do your research and choose a company that allows you to make your own schedule, this will allow more time and location freedom (which is the whole point of working online right?) Typically pays $15 to 20/hour.

7. Youtuber / Podcaster / Streamer

So many people are making YouTube, Twitch, and Podcasting, their full-time job! Choose a niche that you're passionate about, purchase a video camera, and you're set. Make sure to commit time to editing your videos too, as viewers love clear and creative editing. Youtubers, Streamers, and Podcasters are not only becoming legit careers, they're becoming lucrative careers. Brands love to work with people who have large, and engaged audiences so this can become an additional income source besides veiwer counts after some time.

8. Coach / Consultant

Having a career as a coach allows you to do exactly what you love, naturally good at, and make great money doing so. Consultants and coaches see it as the ultimate “win-win” situation. They can help others achieve their goals, while working in a meaningful, purposeful, and well payed profession.

Life coaching, business coaching, confidence coaching, firm consulting, career consulting, and much more. What are you good at? Can you teach it?

9. eCommerce

A basic wikipedia definition for you, "E-commerce (electronic commerce) is the activity of electronically buying or selling of products online or over the Internet." Pretty much, shopping online. If you create products, or have a dream of selling a certain item, eCom may be for you.

When I was in university I dreamed of having a bohemian clothing company that I could wear and sell. So I did a lot of research on how to make that dream my reality. If you'd like to know more about my story and collection you can check out my website or social medias! Ecommerce is a fun and creative way to earn money, but definitely not easy. Building and maintaining a website, product base, shipping plan, email, marketing, and inventory can be overwhelming. Passion will push you forward.

10. Content Creator

There is big money in this niche today. Tons of people are documenting their lives and travel, and in return earn free trips, free hotel stays, and free items/gifts. Just log onto Instagram, you'll see. While it will take a while to grow up a large enough following to make it your full-time gig, tons of people have done it—so you can too! Don't mistake it as no work though, creating content 24/7 requires a creative brain and passion for photography/modeling (if not both!). Editing, videography, copy writing, and scheduling will take up a lot of your time! Most trips are work trips, and having thousands of eyes on you can be stressful.
