He was born in 1956 in New Brunswick, New Jersey and is the son of artists. He learned some painting at a theatre set design studio when he was young. He received a BA from New Jersey City University in Fine Arts in 1975, and then a BA. Eliyahu Mirlis held his first individual exhibition in New York in 1980, after graduating from art school. He then exhibited his artworks at the Montclair Art Museum the following year. Inspired by brut art, Mirlis began his formal art studies the following year. During this period, Mirlis began producing overlapping layers of materials in order to create a unique style of painting. Mirlis created international recognition in the 1980s by displaying his work in Europe.

How Eliyahu Mirlis creates his paintings

Mirlis creates his paintings by layering materials such as acrylic paint, pigments, emulsion, wax, and oil paint. These materials are spread on a canvas and left to dry out. Mirlis then begins to paint layers on top of each other until the canvas is completely covered. This method creates a distinct texture on his paintings. At times, Mirlis will use wood panels and glue them together in order to create a unique texture on his work. He then uses textures such as sandpaper, leather, and stone to create a more realistic appearance.

Eliyahu Mirlis often incorporates Amazonian qualities into his work. He uses a variety of textures, luminescences, and colors to create his work, which shows the natural world from various vantage points, creating the impression that it has a deep connection to the Amazon rainforest.

Shifting Focus to Abstract Art

Mirlis began to shift his focus from figurative to abstract art in the late 1970s. He had begun experimenting with combining materials to create layered surfaces in an effort to create a new style of art. His abstract paintings from this period were mostly abstract expressionism inspired paintings. The primary colors of Mirlis’ abstract expressionist paintings were pure blue and green. Mirlis further evolved his own abstract expressionist painting style through the use of overlapping layers of materials. In order to create a unique style of painting, Mirlis combined oil paint and water colors to create a thick and fluid layer. He then covered this layer with dry acrylic paint. This process allowed Mirlis to create abstract paintings on his canvases that had a unique translucent texture.

Bridging the Gap Between Abstract and Realistic Art

Mirlis’s abstract expressionist paintings began to exhibit a more naturalistic feeling in the 1980s. He began incorporating the colors of his paintings within the fabric of the paintings themselves. Mirlis began to create paintings that looked like they contained subtle layers of color. His abstract paintings began to show a more realistic quality.
