Bohemia, the legendary Pakistani-American rapper and singer, is widely regarded as the pioneer of Punjabi Hip-Hop. Known for his groundbreaking fusion of traditional Punjabi music with Western rap beats, Bohemia has earned global recognition, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries. With his unique sound and bold lyrics, he has shaped the sound of modern Punjabi music.

In this exclusive interview, we dive into his journey, the impact of his music, and what fans can expect from his future projects.

Global Music : "Bohemia, it’s an honor to have you with us today. Let’s start with your background. Can you tell us a bit about your roots and how your journey into music began?"

Bohemia: "Thank you for having me. I was born on October 15, 1979, in Karachi, Pakistan. My full name is Roger David. I moved to California at a young age, which exposed me to different cultures and music genres. Growing up in the U.S., I was heavily influenced by hip-hop culture—especially West Coast rap. But despite the cultural differences, I always felt connected to my Punjabi roots. The combination of those two influences—hip-hop and my Punjabi heritage—sparked the idea for Punjabi rap. That’s how my musical journey began."

Global Music : "You’re widely credited with being the first to bring Punjabi rap to the mainstream. What was it like in the beginning, and did you face any challenges?"

Bohemia: "In the beginning, it was difficult. People didn’t understand what I was doing—mixing Punjabi lyrics with Western rap beats. At the time, traditional Punjabi music was very popular, and there was a stigma around hip-hop. But I believed in the power of music to break boundaries. The challenge was convincing people that you could be Punjabi and still be part of global hip-hop culture. It wasn’t easy, but with time, people started embracing it. Once I released my debut album Vich Pardesan De in 2002, the response was overwhelming, and that marked the start of something new."

Global Music "Your debut album Vich Pardesan De was a massive success. What inspired that album, and what message did you want to convey through it?"

Bohemia: "The album was deeply personal. Growing up as an immigrant, I always felt like I was caught between two worlds—Punjabi culture and American culture. Vich Pardesan De reflects that feeling of displacement, that sense of being in between. The album’s title translates to 'In the Land of Strangers,' and that was my reality. I wanted to show that you can be rooted in your culture while embracing the world around you. The message was simple: embrace your identity, no matter where you are."

Global Music : "You’ve always stayed true to your roots. How do you balance your Punjabi identity with the global appeal of hip-hop music?"

Bohemia: "It’s all about authenticity. Punjabi culture and language have so much to offer. The beauty of Punjabi music is that it’s rich with emotion, stories, and history. What I do is combine that with hip-hop, which has its own raw energy and storytelling. My goal was always to stay true to both sides—to bring the real Punjabi experience to the global stage without losing the essence of who I am. That’s the power of fusion music—it’s not about compromising; it’s about celebrating both cultures."

Global Music : "Your music has influenced a new generation of Punjabi artists. How do you feel about the rise of Punjabi rap and its growing popularity?"

Bohemia: "It’s amazing to see the movement grow. When I started, it was just me in this niche space, trying to create something new. But now, there are so many talented artists coming out of Punjab and beyond, incorporating hip-hop into their music. It feels great to know that I played a role in sparking that change. But more importantly, it’s exciting to see Punjabi rap evolve. The sound is maturing, and artists are experimenting with new styles, all while keeping the Punjabi identity intact. It’s a beautiful thing to witness."

Global Music : "You’ve had a long career, with multiple successful albums and collaborations. Which of your tracks or albums holds a special place in your heart?"

Bohemia: "Each album holds its own significance, but I’d say my debut album Vich Pardesan De will always have a special place for me. It was my introduction to the world, and it was very personal. Thousand Thoughts, which came out in 2012, is also close to my heart. It was the album where I felt I had fully matured as an artist. But honestly, each song I create is a reflection of my thoughts and experiences. That’s why they all feel special to me."

Global Music : "You’ve also been part of some high-profile collaborations. Can you share a memorable experience from working with other artists?"

Bohemia: "Collaborations have always been a great learning experience. I’ve worked with many talented artists, and each collaboration has brought something new to my music. One memorable experience was working with Snoop Dogg on Snoop Dogg's Punjabi Connection. It was a surreal moment for me. Here I was, a kid from Karachi, working with one of the biggest names in hip-hop. That kind of opportunity is what I had always dreamed of, and it made me realize how music has the power to connect people across cultures."

Global Music : "What’s next for you, Bohemia? Do you have any upcoming projects or plans you’d like to share with your fans?"

Bohemia: "I’m always working on new music. There’s an album in the works, and I’m really excited about it. I’m trying to push the boundaries of what Punjabi rap can be, mixing more genres and experimenting with different sounds. I’ve also got a few collaborations lined up, but I can’t say too much about that yet. I want to surprise my fans. But the biggest thing is that I’m committed to staying true to myself and continuing to represent Punjabi culture in a way that resonates with the world."

Global Music : "Bohemia, thank you for your time today. You’ve been an inspiration to millions, and we’re all excited to see what you do next."

Bohemia: "Thank you so much for the kind words. It’s been an honor to share my journey with you. To all my fans out there—keep supporting the music and stay true to who you are. Let’s keep pushing boundaries together."

Bohemia, with his blend of rap and Punjabi culture, continues to be a trailblazer in the global music scene. His influence has left an indelible mark on the world of hip-hop and Punjabi music, and with his upcoming projects, he’s sure to continue inspiring the next generation of artists. Stay tuned for more from the king of Punjabi rap!
