Interview With Author Rebecca Lemke

Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.

I love meeting and getting to know other authors! Contrary to what some people might've alluded to, I don't see them as competition, but rather friends who I can work with and cheer on.

I honestly don't remember how I met Rebecca Lemke - because the Internet is funny like that - but she's become one of my good friends over the months. She's a cool mom and a hobbyist, and quite the jack of all trades in fact! She enjoys hand-knitting blankets, crocheting scrunchies, traveling, painting, music (anything Taylor’s version, of course), and enjoying her family.

She came into the publishing world as a nonfiction author, but she's retired from the genre and now spends her free hours writing her science fantasy series Geneshifters. Here's the cover and blurb of the first book, Blood of Beasts:

Humanity has fallen, decimated by biological warfare. Survival is only afforded to the elite. Super soldiers were created to protect the vulnerable remains of the United States.

Titania has been in hiding since she escaped the program. For years, she has kept her origin secret, even from her best friend, James.

When she is forced to manifest her power, she and James must flee from her creator. As forces work to tear them apart, they must find a way to stay together and answer the question: Can you love someone who isn’t human anymore?

And here is our super fun interview session!

What made you decide to publish independently?

I indie published for the first time because the project was going to be for a few people and it wasn’t necessary to go through a big publisher to distribute it. It ended up doing amazing on its own, despite never meaning for it to be widely distributed. It still sells to this day.

But you were also traditionally published. Got a story to share about your querying and publication journey?

I am actually a hybrid author, so I am indie and traditionally published. The publishing house I work with contacted me via email to ask if I wanted to be in a sample platter book of authors in my state and I said yes! It was an amazing experience and I still appreciate the opportunity.

What has been your most unforgettable experience (good or bad) as an author?

The most unforgettable experience I’ve had as an author is when the first emails started coming in from all over the world. People who were helped by what I had written reached out to tell me so. It was incredible and an unexpected but extremely fulfilling experience.

Who do you think you inspire? If not, who and what do you want to inspire?

I hope to inspire everyone I run across in some ways, but most especially teens. I am always thinking about what would have helped younger me and adjusting what I do accordingly.

What character archetype would you be if you were a character in a book, movie or TV series?

Probably the one who gets killed first 😂 No, in all seriousness I would be The Lover or The Jester.

What kind of animal character would you be in your story, and why?

Probably a dolphin. I’ve always thought dolphins were pretty cool and I’m partial to beach/ocean settings.

If you were not doing what you are doing now, what activity or hobby would be keeping you busy?

Knitting, crocheting, cooking, painting. I actually looked an wax seal kits the other day! 😂🙈 Somebody needs to take all the hobby options away from me.

What do you consider as your weakness, and have you done anything to overcome it?

Being overly sensitive toward feedback from people who don’t deserve that level of consideration. I have gotten some wise advice from quite a few mentors in my life that have helped me develop better resilience toward this kind of feedback.

Anything else you want to tell your fans, our readers, and the writing/reading/blogging community at large?

Thank you so much for reading! I appreciate the overwhelming amount of support I’ve received from people reading my work, purchases, reviews, sharing, telling a friend, hyping me up, and persistently encouraging and asking where the next book is. It makes a difference!
