Humanity Will Receive An Alien Message From Mars
Tomorrow will serve as a mockup of what it may be like for Earthlings to receive communication from extraterrestrial civilisation. On May 24 at 7 PM UTC (12 PM PDT), a message will be sent by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) of the European Space Agency. It will be retrieved by someone on Earth 16 minutes later. However, the message is not clear-cut. The whole population will be needed to help with the decoding process.

The Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope at the Green Bank Observatory, the Allen Telescope Array operated by the SETI Institute, and the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station observatory run by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics are three top-notch radio telescopes ready to pick up the signal. The data will be hosted and shared via the initiative A Sign In Space.
This initiative was started by visionary artist Daniela de Paulis. She and her colleagues are keeping quiet about the communication's substance, which presents a challenge to the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) community and serves as a useful simulation of what would occur if we ever get a message from an advanced alien civilization.
According to de Paulis, "Humanity has looked for significance in dramatic and transforming experiences throughout history. "For every one of humanity, hearing from an alien civilization would be a profoundly transformative event. Through international collaboration, A Sign in Space gives the once-in-a-lifetime chance to concretely practice and get ready for this scenario, encouraging an open-ended search for meaning across all cultures and disciplines.
The initiative aims to comprehend how such detection would go, particularly how the public and scientists will approach deciphering and interpreting the message. A dedicated Discord server and a submission page will be available to anyone who wish to work together to decode the message, whether it be through statistical analysis or creative interpretation.
It's well past time for this type of trial. Since we began looking for alien transmissions more than 60 years ago, Franck Marchis, Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute and Chief Science Officer of Unistellar, said that we never fully considered what it would be like to receive and decode such a signal.
The "A Sign In Space" simulation is finally a chance to bring together all the various and inquisitive minds at the cutting edge of science and art so that we will be prepared if a signal ever reaches us.
The worldwide collaboration and outreach have been planned by Marchis, and she will also co-present a live webcast of Earth receiving the signal. This project will demand international collaboration, just like the actual thing. This is about Earth's communities, cultures, and skills in many different sectors cooperating in the face of something that will change the world: we are not alone out there. It is not simply about scientific knowledge or space knowledge.
What would happen if we discover a signal from extraterrestrial intelligence has been a major concern since the start of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program. Although preliminary protocols have been set up, debates continue regarding the precise implications of this finding for people.
In a report published in 2020, Kenneth Wisian and John Traphagan hypothesized that there was a chance of a SETI finding that had not been sufficiently researched beforehand. Wisian and Traphagen contended that the threat of discovery came not from the aliens but from Earthly problems like espionage, rising international tensions, and even all-out war that may result from the actual or imagined advantage of having access to this communication.
The goal of this realpolitik strategy was to portray the detection as a pragmatic assessment of what politicians would do. And, as depicted in a number of recent films, they saw the military swiftly seizing control of extraterrestrial communication. This strategy, according to recent research by Jason Wright, Chelsea Haramia, and Gabriel Swiney, is flawed. They claim that it will be highly challenging to keep the discovery of an extraterrestrial signal a secret or restricted to a single nation.
