As the Chief Executive Owner of Dr. Sasha Mercedes, LLC, Dr. Sasha Mercedes work bridges the gap between personal struggles and profound breakthroughs in mental health advocacy. Her diverse expertise — spanning trauma recovery, relationship counseling, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community — has reshaped how mental health is understood and addressed. A prolific author of nearly ten books, she has created a legacy rooted in resilience, gratitude, and growth, offering both practical tools and emotional support to her readers.

It’s about empowering others to rise above their circumstances and embrace their own strength. Now, through her private practice, Inside and Out Consulting, LLC, and her academic roles at Yorkville and CalSouthern University, Dr. Sasha continues to redefine what it means to heal and thrive in today’s world.

If you could describe the essence of your work in one song, what would it be, and why?
The essence of my work is best described by “Rise Up” by Andra Day. This song captures the spirit of resilience, hope, and the courage to push through adversity. It mirrors the encouragement I provide to clients and students, reminding them that even when they feel weighed down, they have the strength to rise again and thrive.
What’s the most surprising or unconventional lesson you’ve learned from teaching courses in psychology and counseling?
One of the most surprising lessons is how much students’ unique perspectives can challenge and expand my own understanding of the material. Teaching is a two-way process; while I aim to impart knowledge, I’m constantly reminded of the diversity of human experience and how theory transforms when filtered through lived realities.
Relationships often reflect our inner worlds — what’s one habit or mindset shift that can transform how we show up for others?
The habit of practicing self-awareness and self-compassion can transform relationships. When we understand our triggers, unmet needs, and strengths, we’re better equipped to show up authentically for others. Pairing that with self-compassion helps us approach relationships from a place of wholeness rather than seeking validation or perfection.

How has your work with the LGBTQ+ community shaped or expanded your understanding of resilience and healing?
Working with the LGBTQ+ community has deepened my appreciation for the strength it takes to live authentically in the face of societal stigma and discrimination. It has reinforced the importance of creating affirming spaces where individuals can heal, celebrate their identity, and feel truly seen. This work has taught me that resilience is not just about enduring but about thriving unapologetically.
Writing books is no small feat! How can we access your books and what can readers take away from reading them?
My books are available online through major retailers like Amazon, and some are also available in local bookstores. Readers can take away actionable insights into resilience, gratitude, and personal growth. My writing is designed to be both practical and inspirational, providing tools for healing while encouraging self-reflection and empowerment.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone standing at the crossroads of trauma and triumph?
Trust that your pain has a purpose and that triumph often begins with a single step forward, no matter how small. Surround yourself with supportive people, focus on what you can control, and allow yourself the grace to heal at your own pace. Remember, your story isn’t over, and every chapter has the power to redefine your journey.
