Please tell us about your company and products.

Deseri: Led by the belief that every woman deserves to experience the rewards of premium quality design, DESERI presents a line of signature handbags and jewelry that are at once timelessly elegant and undeniably of-the-moment. Handmade in Spain, each handbag is intended as a work of art that reflects the skill of the artesian and the eye of the designer.

Please tell us about your journey of being a successful business owner.

Deseri:With a deep appreciation and a commitment to quality, I created a brand that is the embodiment of luxury made accessible. After a successful career in education, I took a leap of faith to pursue my lifelong dream of starting my own Black female-owned business. Today, DESERI stands as a representation of all women, promising the versatility and functionality that the roles of a modern woman demand.

How does DESERI aim to represent and celebrate the diversity and strength of modern women, particularly Black women, through its designs?

Deseri: DESERI aims to represent and celebrate the diversity and strength of modern women, particularly Black women, through its designs. By featuring diverse models in marketing campaigns, DESERI ensures that women of all backgrounds, especially Black women, see themselves represented and celebrated. The brand collaborates with female artists and designers to create exclusive pieces, highlighting their talents and contributions to the fashion industry. Each handbag is crafted with the highest quality materials and attention to detail, reflecting the excellence and sophistication of the women who carry them. Through storytelling, DESERI shares the stories behind each design, focusing on the inspiration and meaning, to create a deeper connection with the brand and its mission. By naming the bags after strong and successful Black women, DESERI not only offers a beautiful, well-crafted handbag but also one that bears the name of a strong woman. Through these efforts, DESERI not only creates beautiful handbags but also celebrates and honors the diversity and strength of modern women, particularly Black women.

What were some of the significant challenges you faced as a Black female entrepreneur in the luxury market, and how did you overcome them?

Deseri: As a Black female entrepreneur in the luxury market, I faced several challenges. The luxury market often holds preconceived notions about what luxury brands should look like and who should be leading them, but I challenged these stereotypes by emphasizing the uniqueness and cultural richness of DESERI’s designs, proving that luxury can come from diverse backgrounds. Gaining visibility in a market dominated by established brands was tough, so I leveraged social media, collaborated with influencers, and participated in high-profile events to build brand awareness. I also featured diverse models and collaborated with female artists. Educating potential customers about the value and quality of a Black-owned luxury brand was essential, so through storytelling, sharing the inspiration behind each design, and highlighting the craftsmanship involved, I built a loyal customer base that appreciates the brand’s values and mission. By addressing these challenges head-on with resilience, creativity, and a focus on craftsmanship and quality, I was able to carve out a space for DESERI in the luxury market and demonstrate that diversity is an asset, not a barrier.

How does your personal style and aesthetic influence the designs and overall direction of the brand?

Deseri: My personal style significantly influences the designs and overall direction of the brand. I favor timeless pieces with solid colors and clean lines, which is reflected in my designs. This aesthetic ensures that each piece remains classic and versatile, appealing to women who appreciate understated luxury and refined craftsmanship. By integrating these elements into the brand, DESERI offers products that are not only beautiful and well-made but also embody a sense of timeless elegance and subtle sophistication that aligns with my own personal style.

What are your long-term goals for DESERI, and how do you envision the brand evolving in the coming years?

Deseri: My long-term goals for DESERI are to expand its presence globally while maintaining our commitment to quality. I envision the brand evolving by continuing to innovate in design, introducing new collections that reflect the evolving tastes and needs of modern women. We plan to collaborate with more artists, brands, and designers from diverse backgrounds to bring fresh perspectives and creativity to our products. Ultimately, I see DESERI becoming a leading name in the luxury market, known not only for our handbags but also for our dedication to celebrating diversity, empowering women, and making a positive impact on the world.

What advice would you offer to other Black women looking to break into the luxury fashion industry?

Deseri: I’d advise staying true to your unique vision, as it can set you apart. Build a strong network by attending industry events, joining professional organizations, and finding mentors for support. Continuously educate yourself about all aspects of the industry and use social media to showcase your brand and connect with your audience. Be resilient in the face of challenges and prioritize quality in your products. Finally, tell your story compellingly, sharing your journey and the values driving your brand, to connect with your audience and build a strong reputation. Most of all, Believe in your potential, stay passionate, and pursue your dreams fearlessly.
