The Kendall Defoe Challenge!

A Very Special One!

By Kendall Defoe Published 8 months ago 3 min read
The Eventual Winner?

It is the middle of the month of May. I have marked the last set of exams at the college…and begun a new contract at an office that is testing the wear and tear of my feet (always on fire after three straight hours). The weather has become warm enough for people to become confused as to what they should wear outside (parkas and shorts all over my commute). The tax refund is in, as are the bills for other joys of life. And I have noticed something special on this page…

…Challenges.

Yes, I know that there have been plenty of Challenges on the Vocal page. I am more than aware of this after all of the disappointments I have had with my entries (two Honorable Mentions can take away some of the pain), and I will continue to jump into the pool. What has surprised me are the number of Personal Challenges that have been posted by my fellow writers: Ten Things I Like About Myself; “Life Finds A Way” line from “Jurassic Park” as a prompt, etc. Our cups are running over and over this season…and this had me thinking:

Why not create my own Challenge?

I know the rules and what I would like to see if I did make my own entry into this esteemed trope. I know that there has to be a set of rules and offers for the writer willing to try and make it to the top.

So, here is my offer:

The Kendall Defoe Challenge!

Now, I have thought long and hard about this, and I know that I need to set up rules, a deadline, and offer prizes in the form of tips.

Here we go…

Rules: This will be a Challenge where Kendall Defoe will attempt to write more often about the difficulties of being Kendall Defoe. Kendall Defoe is approaching another summer where he will be working, and yet still budgeting to avoid living on the streets and finding his next meal in a dumpster. That sounds somewhat bleak, but the ability to write through the pain has made it possible for him to accept anything thrown his way after such a long and heady life.

Also, this will be open to any community that Kendall Defoe sees fit to enter (Viva might not be an option; Pride would never accept me as coming out of a non-existent closet; maybe Journal or one of the various writing groups added in the last few years?). This will be open to the experiences and encounters Kendall Defoe faces this season.

Word Limit: It will be limited to the limits of the limitations of the Vocal page.

Deadline: A very difficult choice will have to be made here. Kendall Defoe appreciates watching the time dwindle away as he wastes his time with work and other responsibilities. This will be made clear at a later date.

Prizes:

First Tip: “Buy low, sell high”

Second Tip: “Check your blind spots”

Third Tip: “Prime before painting”

Hundreds of Honorable Mentions if this makes you laugh…

*

Kendall Defoe looks forward to what Kendall Defoe manages to create with this Challenge (pending my approval and a final review).

Wish me luck!

All I've charged myself...

Haha! Consistently writing about yourself in third person seems quite difficult! I'm impressed and amused!

Ah yes the satirical realm! You’re going to do great!

  • Best wishes & best of luck, Kendall. Your third tip reminds me of an old preacher joke. Seems there was a preacher who thought the old church needed a fresh coat of paint. Unfortunately, he had only one can of paint, which was nowhere near enough for the job. So he thinned it enough to make it last. As he finished his last brush stroke, the skies darkened & opened up with a real gully-washer, washing all his hard work into said gully. As the rains died down & the skies began to clear, he heard a voice calling from the heavens sounding remarkably like distant thunder, "Repaint & thin no more!"

Being Canadian you forgot an important tip; 'Don't eat yellow snow.' I like this Challenge it may be tough but sounds doable. so enjoy it
