The Day My Dog Became a YouTube Star (And I Didn’t Even Know It)

From Fetching Balls to Breaking the Internet

By FutureVoicesPublished 8 months ago 2 min read

So, I’ve been living with my dog, Charlie, for about two years now. Charlie is the kind of dog who thinks he’s the main character in every situation. If there's a door, he’ll bark at it. If there’s food, he’ll stare at it like it's the last meal on Earth. If there’s a mirror, he’ll try to make out with it. He’s a simple creature, but I love him.

But one Saturday morning, everything changed. I was making breakfast, half-dead from lack of caffeine, and Charlie was doing his usual thing bouncing around the kitchen like a toddler on a sugar high. I was barely able to keep my balance when he suddenly did the thing.

The thing where he jumps straight up in the air and lands in the most ridiculous way possible. I call it his “I’m a majestic unicorn” move. He does it whenever he’s excited, which is often, because, well, he’s a dog.

This time, however, he managed to launch himself perfectly into a cabinet door, which swung open just as he came down. The result? A kitchen disaster of epic proportions. It was like a scene from an action movie: slow motion, cabinet door flying open, Charlie spinning mid-air, a bowl of cereal turning into a confetti explosion.

And then... silence.

I looked around. My heart rate was higher than usual. Charlie was standing there, eyes wide, wondering if I’d seen his graceful maneuver. But before I could react, something unexpected happened. My phone which was recording a stupid Snapchat story had captured the entire thing.

I watched the footage. There was Charlie, a blur of fur and enthusiasm, executing what could only be described as a Cirque du Soleil move, followed by a cereal explosion that made it look like I had just entered a war zone.

I posted it. It was 7 a.m., I was exhausted, and I thought maybe five of my friends would chuckle.

By 9 a.m., I had a notification that my video was being shared by people I didn’t know. By noon, the video had over 1,000 views. By 3 p.m., a random account commented, “This is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Charlie’s got moves!” And then it hit me: Charlie had just gone viral.

I was now managing a dog who had better social media skills than I did. I wasn’t even sure how to respond to all the messages “Can I get an autographed paw print?!” “Is Charlie available for interviews?” “When’s his merch drop?” Merch?

I started getting requests from dog influencers asking for collaborations. My inbox was filled with messages like “We’d love to sponsor Charlie’s next big jump!”

I’m just trying to live my life, and now my dog has a better career than I do. If Charlie gets a brand deal with a pet food company before I land my next freelance gig, I’m going to lose it.

But here’s the best part: Charlie doesn’t care. He’s still doing his thing bouncing around, living his best life. And I’m over here getting offered brand deals for my dog’s “signature move.” You know, the one where he crashes into everything, completely unaware of how much money it’s making.

At least he’s not asking for a manager… yet.
