Carmen Brown: The matriarch (peacemaker) of the Brown family. She grew up in Miami. She is a loving and caring mother trying to raise her children in a traditional Cuban way. She is also strong, unafraid to stand up for her family. She loves the music of Celia Cruz. She loves Donovan.
• Favorite expressions: “Fujumba!” “Contrale!” She does not like to use swear words, so she makes up her own words that are neither Spanish nor English.
Alex Brown: The Brown's son. He is a teenager struggling to adjust to life as a Jamaican American. He is a gamer. He is trying to find his place in the world. Alex loves grunge music, especially Soundgarden.
• Favorite expression: “Ah geez,” like in the movie Kung Pow!
Joy-Ann Brown: The Brown's daughter. She is a teenager who is trying to find her own identity. She is also struggling with the challenges of being a Jamaican-Cuban-American teenager in the United States. She loves rap music, especially Nas.
• Favorite expressions: None. She is always slightly cynical.
Blanca Morejon: Carmen’s sister who always wants to be the center of attention. She loves American music and Tina Turner.
• Favorite expressions: “Yep!” and “YOLO” or anything related to her carpe diem view of life.
Camilo Morejon: Carmen’s brother who always comes up with get-rich-quick schemes. He loves jazz, especially Coltrane. U.S army veteran.
• Favorite expression: “Heeeeeeey!” when entering a room. He calls Donovan “Brother Don.”
Amanda Morejon. Caremen’s mother is loving and caring. She is always there for her children and grandchildren. Very nosy. Traditional Cuban woman. Loves Old fashioned Cuban music.
• Favorite expressions: “Claro!” and “En Cuba.” She exaggerates her life back in Cuba and makes up stories about her uncles, Primo and Segundo (twins). The family never knows whether she is telling the truth or making stuff up.

Synopsis:
In the pilot episode of "Arroz con Mango," Joy-Ann's decision to get a tattoo becomes a central plot point. While Joy-Ann embraces her individuality, her father, Donovan, strongly opposes the idea due to concerns about stability and financial success. CARMEN
Yes, honey, you left them in the fridge.
Donovan reaches out to grab the keys, but Carmen playfully points to her cheek.
CARMEN (CONT'D)
Kiss first.
Donovan chuckles and pecks Carmen on the cheek.
DONOVAN
What would I do without you?
CARMEN
You'd be wandering around Miramar, saying (fake Jamaican accent, imitating Donovan), "What else did I lose now?"
As Donovan adjusts his suit, Carmen helps him with his tie.
CARMEN (CONT'D)
Don't forget; you need to be home early. I've planned a surprise party for Joy-Ann's acceptance into art school.
Donovan frowns at the mention of a surprise party. He doesn't like surprises.
DONOVAN
So, did you invite Camilo?
Carmen gives Donovan an amused look. She nods.
DONOVAN
Of course, I hope he isn't coming to borrow any more money from us.
CARMEN (Playfully)
Donovan!
CARMEN
And Blanca, too.
DONOVAN
Of course, what would any family gathering be without her?
CARMEN
And I've also invited my mother
DONOVAN
Amanda’s still here?
Carmen chuckles, knowing Donovan's reaction to Amanda's extended stay.
CARMEN
Yes, she's still here. And don't worry; I've invited Patrick too, if he ever decides to come out of his room.
Donovan grunts.
DONOVAN
Are you going to make some of your delicious flan?
Carmen playfully rolls her eyes at Donovan's attempt to butter her up.
CARMEN
Don't try to play smart with me, sir. It's already in the fridge. How do you think I found your keys?
Donovan looks away sheepishly.
CARMEN
Well, we'll see what happens. Don't forget, 4:00 PM sharp, and no Jamaican time.
Carmen smiles, playfully nudging Donovan.
CARMEN
I'll make sure everything goes smoothly. Now go, you don't want to be late for work.
Donovan kisses Carmen on the forehead and heads out the door.
DONOVAN
Thank you, my love. See you later.
Carmen waves him off with a smile, ready to tackle the party preparations.
CARMEN
See you later. Have a great day!
As Donovan exits, Carmen turns her attention to the tasks at hand, humming a Celia Cruz tune happily to herself.

ACT 1: Scene 2
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - LOCKERS - DAY
The scene opens with an establishing shot of the school exterior. The camera then moves inside to a row of lockers in the bustling hallway.
Joy-Ann stands among her older friends, who proudly show off their tattoos on their sides. They chat excitedly about their ink, sharing stories and experiences.
JOY-ANN
(looking intrigued)
Wow, those tattoos look amazing!
FRIEND 1
(grinning)
Mira lo, we got them last summer. Matching tattoos!
FRIEND 2
(excitedly)
You should get one, Joy-Ann. How are you going to be an artist without tattoos?
Joy-Ann hesitates for a moment, considering their suggestion. She looks down at her unmarked skin.
JOY-ANN
(slightly nervous)
I've always thought about getting a tattoo, but I'm not sure if my parents would approve.
FRIEND 2
(encouragingly)
You should do whatever makes you happy, Joy-Ann.
FRIEND 1
Pero, what will your father think?
JOY-ANN
I already know.
FRIEND 2
Yeah, he can really be a pesao.
JoyAnn looks at FRIEND 1 crossly, and she bows her head. No one but her is allowed to talk badly about her dad. Joy-Ann takes a deep breath, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension.
JOY-ANN
(determined)
But you know what? You're right. I think I want to get a tattoo.
Her friends cheer her on, supportive of her decision.
FRIEND 1
(excited)
That's awesome, Joy-Ann! We'll go with you to the tattoo shop if you want.
JOY-ANN
(grateful)
Thank you, guys. I appreciate your support. But I think I will go by myself.
FRIEND 1
Okay, suit yourself!
The friends continue their conversation, planning to visit the tattoo shop together. Joy-Ann's excitement grows as she imagines the design she wants to get.

Scene 3
INT. TATTOO PARLOR - DAY
Joy-Ann enters the tattoo parlor, looking both nervous and excited. She walks up to the counter where the OWNER, a middle-aged tattoo artist, stands.
JOY-ANN
(trying to appear confident)
Hi, I'd like to get a tattoo, please.
OWNER
(raising an eyebrow. He has sized her up already)
Sure, kid. I'll need to see some ID.
JOY-ANN
Why do I need an ID?
OWNER
State Law, kid. I don't want the cops shutting me down because I inked some minor.
JOY-ANN
(defensively)
I'm not a kid.
OWNER
Sure, kid. But you're not getting a tattoo until I see some ID. So do you have it or not?
Joy-Ann hesitates for a moment, realizing she may encounter a roadblock.
JOY-ANN
(trying to sound older)
I'm almost eighteen.
OWNER
(skeptical)
Almost doesn't cut it, kid. I need to see some ID or parental consent for anyone under eighteen.
Joy-Ann's disappointment is evident, but she's determined not to give up.
JOY-ANN
(defiantly)
Well, I'll be back. I'll get my parents' consent, and then you won't be able to turn me down.
OWNER
(amused)
Sure, kid. We'll see about that.
Joy-Ann walks out of the tattoo parlor, her determination undeterred. The owner watches her go with a hint of curiosity.
The scene ends with the owner returning to work, wondering if Joy-Ann will follow through on her promise to return with parental consent.

Act 1: Scene 4
INT. PATRICK'S BEDROOM - DAY
Patrick sits in his bedroom, engrossed in a video game. The room is filled with posters of his favorite grunge bands and gaming artwork. The sound of grunge music blares from his speakers.
Joy-Ann enters the room, interrupting Patrick's gaming session. She turns down the volume on his set.
JOY-ANN
(slightly nervous)
Hey, Patrick. Can I talk to you about something?
Patrick pauses the game and takes off his headphones, looking at Joy-Ann curiously.
PATRICK
(slightly annoyed)
What's up? Can't you see I'm in the middle of something?
JOY-ANN
(apologetic)
Sorry, Patrick. I just wanted to get your opinion on something. I'm thinking about getting a tattoo.
Patrick's eyes widen, and he lets out a laugh.
PATRICK
(laughing)
Are you crazy? You know how Pops feels about things like this. I can already hear him now, "Jesus Christ!" (imitating Donovan)
Joy-Ann rolls her eyes but is still eager to hear Patrick's thoughts.
JOY-ANN
But what do you think, Patrick?
PATRICK
Honestly, it doesn't matter to me. Just promise me one thing – no tramp stamp, okay?
Joy-Ann chuckles at Patrick's response, grateful for his support.
JOY-ANN
(relieved)
Thanks, Patrick.
Joy-Ann begins to leave the room, but Patrick drops a hint about the Surprise Party before she closes the door.
PATRICK
(slyly)
Oh, by the way, they planned a surprise party for you. So, act surprised when they bring out the flan.
Patrick grins, feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity.
JOY-ANN
(teasingly)
Oh, great. Another surprise. Can't wait to see what they've come up with this time.
Joy-Ann closes the door and heads downstairs, leaving Patrick to resume his gaming session. The room fills with the sounds of grunge music once again.

Scene 5
INT. FAMILY LIVING ROOM - DAY
ENTER BLANCA
Blanca, dressed in outrageous attire with dyed purple hair, enters the living room. Big hoop earrings and beach flip-flops.
JOY-ANN
(excitedly)
Aunt Blanca, what are you doing here?
BLANCA
I came to do your mother's nails.
JOY-ANN
It's good that you're here. I wanted to talk to you. I'm thinking about getting a tattoo.
Blanca's eyes light up with excitement.
BLANCA
(enthusiastically)
You mean like mine, Mira, chica!
(She shows Joy-Ann her tattoos, which she has kept covered)
Go for it, girl! You only live once!
CARMEN (Offstage)
(The clatter of dishes falling)
Fujumba!
Is that my sister out there?
Blanca covers up her tattoos.
ENTER CARMEN
Blanca and Carmen share a hug, despite Carmen's reservations about her sister's flamboyant appearance.
BLANCA
(playfully)
Well, what can I say? It's who I am, sis. You know that.
Blanca catches a whiff of something delicious in the kitchen.
BLANCA
(excitedly)
Is that arroz con pollo I smell? The last time I made it, it was a real Arroz con mango.
JOY-ANN
(exclaiming)
Like this family, right?
CARMEN
Joy-Ann!
JOY-ANN
You know it's true.
CARMEN
Yes, but it’s OUR arroz con mango.
Joy-Ann explains that she wants to get a tattoo, but she needs parental consent.
JOY-ANN
Please, Mom. I've been wanting to do this for a long time.
CARMEN
Okay, but let's hear what your father has to say about your tattoo idea.
ENTER CAMILO
Through the kitchen, Camilo makes a surprise entrance.
CAMILO
Heeeeeeey! I heard there was a party here tonight. Where's the beer?
CARMEN
Exasperated.
CAMILO
Don't look so surprised, sis. You know there aren't any secrets in this family. So what were you guys talking about? I saw you.
JOY-ANN
(turning to Camilo)
Camilo, what do you think about getting a tattoo? I really want one.
Camilo looks at Joy-Ann, his analytical mind working through her request.
CAMILO
(raising an eyebrow)
Hmm, a tattoo, huh? It's something permanent, Joy-Ann. Are you sure you want to do something that will be with you forever?
Joy-Ann is taken aback by Camilo's unexpected response. She was expecting him to be on her side.
JOY-ANN
(defensively. She is shocked. She thought Camilo would be on her side)
Why not? Lots of people have tattoos. It's a way to express yourself.
CARMEN
Joy-Ann, listen to Camilo. Getting a tattoo is a big decision. It's something that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Have you really thought it through?
Joy-Ann's excitement wavers as she considers the weight of Camilo and Carmen's words.
JOY-ANN
(softly)
I... I didn't realize it was such a big deal. Maybe I should think about it more.
(Camilo, recognizing the impact of his words, softens his expression.)
CAMILO
(smiling)
Take your time, Joy-Ann. Don’t be in such a rush. You’ve got a lifetime ahead of you.
Carmen looks grateful for her brother’s guidance and gives them both a nod.
JOY-ANN
Thank you, Camilo. I appreciate your honesty.
As Joy-Ann walks away, deep in thought, Camilo watches her with concern and admiration.
CARMEN
(turning to Camilo)
You know, sometimes you do use that brain of yours for good, Camilo.
Camilo offers a half-smile, acknowledging Carmen's words.
CAMILO
(sincerely)
I'll do my best, Carmen. Somos familia, no?
They share a brief moment of understanding before returning to the lively chaos of the family gathering.
ENTER DONOVAN
Enter Donovan after a hard day at work. He is hungry and wants to eat right away. He has brought home a flyer for medical school, claiming one of his clients gave it to him. Everyone raises their eyebrows, not believing him. Donovan wants Joy-Ann to become a doctor and thinks she will starve to death if she becomes an artist.
CAMILO
Brother Don!
He walks over to Donovan and hugs him. Donovan returns the hug.
Donovan
How you doing, man?
CAMILO
I’m here.
JOY-ANN
(slightly nervous)
Dad, can I talk to you about something.
(Joy-Ann motions as if she wants to speak in private)
DONOVAN
(tired)
Whatever you’re going to say, Joy-Ann, say it here. The rest of the family probably knows already.
(They all clear their throats)
JOY-ANN
(pleading)
It's important, Dad. It's about my future.
DONOVAN
You’re going to medical school?
JOY-ANN
No, Dad.
Donovan sighs, reluctantly giving her his attention.
DONOVAN
(trying to sound interested)
Alright, what is it?
JOY-ANN
(excitedly)
I want to get a tattoo.
DONOVAN
No, sir. No way!
Donovan's face tightens with concern.
JOY-ANN
But why?
DONOVAN
You know why.
DONOVAN
Joy-Ann, do you know how many artists I've known from Jamaica who have starved to death?
JOY-ANN
(defiantly)
But Dad, being an artist is what makes me happy. I want to do what I love, not just chase money.
Donovan's frustration rises as his expectations clash with Joy-Ann's desires. He has given up his dreams of being a reggae singer to become a car salesman.
DONOVAN
(angry)
Jesus Christ, you children are going to drive me mad! All I want is for you to have a secure future, and here you are, talking about tattoos like some of those people.
JOY-ANN
(standing her ground)
But Dad, Money isn't everything.
Donovan shakes his head.
Carmen steps in, trying to mediate the conflict.
CARMEN
(calmingly)
Donovan, let's hear what Joy-Ann has to say. She's old enough to make decisions about her own future.

ENTER AMANDA
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Amanda, the elegant and distinguished matriarch of the family, enters the room with a warm smile.
AMANDA
(affectionately)
Ah, mi familia, qué barbaridad! I could hear you all from across the street.
Joy-Ann explains what has been happening. Donovan turns to Amanda, hoping for her support in his disagreement with Joy-Ann's desire for a tattoo.
DONOVAN
Amanda, you understand, right? I can't let Joy-Ann get a tattoo. It's not right.
Amanda's eyes twinkle mischievously as she reveals a secret of her own.
AMANDA
(smiling)
I wish I could agree with you, Donovan. But I can't do it. My conscience won't allow me.
DONOVAN
(confused)
What do you mean?
Amanda lifts her pant leg slightly, revealing a tattoo of a rose on her ankle.
CARMEN
(surprised)
Mama!
Amanda's revelation takes Donovan aback.
AMANDA
(after a moment)
After your father passed away, I got a tattoo of a rose on my ankle. I was 50 years old. La vida es muy corta, mi hija.
DONOVAN
(defiantly)
I don't care if you and Queen Elizabeth got a tattoo. I still say no.
Carmen interjects, offering a compromise.
CARMEN
(suggesting)
How about starting with a temporary tattoo, like henna that henna tattoo I got on that cruise we went on, Donovan?
JOY-ANN
Wait, when did this happen?
BLANCA
Do you think your mom was always your mom?
CARMEN
If you get the henna tattoo, we can all get used to the idea, and Joy-Ann can still express herself.
Patrick, listening from his room, decides to join the conversation.
PATRICK
(coming into the room)
What's the commotion?
DONOVAN
(annoyed)
Your sister, it’s like she drank mad puss milk and wants to get a tattoo. Please tell me you don't agree with her.
PATRICK
(smiling)
Dad, she already knows how you feel about this. If she's determined, and you know her, she'll find a way. I'll take her to a tattoo parlor if that's what she wants.
CARMEN
(supportive)
That sounds great. What do you say, honey?
Donovan hesitates for a moment, weighing his options. Finally, he reluctantly agrees, but not without expressing his protest.
DONOVAN
(firmly)
All right, I agree, but let it be known that I'm doing this under protest.
CAMILO
We know. Now everyone, bring it in!
The family members gather for a heartfelt hug.
FADE OUT.
ACT 1: Scene 6
INT. DONOVAN AND CARMEN'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Donovan and Carmen, exhausted from the day's events, slip into bed together. They find comfort in each other's presence as they reflect on the day's events.
CARMEN
(sighing)
We have to give them room to be themselves, Donovan. They need to find their own way.
DONOVAN
(nodding)
I know, but I worry. I don't want them to make mistakes they'll regret for the rest of their lives.
CARMEN
(assuringly)
I understand, honey. We'll guide them as best as we can, but we also need to trust them to make their own choices.
They share a moment of understanding and love, knowing that their children's journey is just beginning.
They exchange affectionate glances and settle into each other's arms, finding solace in their shared journey as they drift off to sleep.
DONOVAN
Honey, do you know where I left my keys
CARMEN
I'll help you to find them tomorrow before I go to work. Goodnight, love.
DONOVAN
(smiling)
