Until there was just you and me, I never dreamed you would be the one for me—a story of how I fell in love with my best friend.
Sophia Turner is from a wealthy and privileged family. She has the whole world at her fingertips, or so people think! But being a Turner is more than beauty and popularity; it's about being smart and successful. Sophia is on a one-way track to success.
The only daughter of Walter and Mary Turner would think Sophia has it comfortable, but it is anything but easy. Sophia has to prove herself to her father and four older brothers continually. Sophia's mother is very much from the south; some would say a true southern lady, meaning the Turner family's husband or men is in charge. Sophia tries to get the best grade has the best social status. But no matter what, she can't seem to satisfy her father or get out of her brother's shadow. Sophia's father always tells her not to show people how smart she is because it is unattractive for a woman to outsmart a man. The woman's job is to be beautiful and take care of the house and children.
Sophia wants to go to college and get a degree, along with being valedictorian of her high school class. Her father doesn't mind her going to college to meet a man, but no daughter of his is going into a manly career. Sophia wanted to be a lawyer and then work her way to being a judge. It was unheard of for women in her town, let alone her family working outside the home. She would plead with her father to do something outside the home rather than be a housewife and planning parties. One night one of the fights got so bad. Sophia left the house and just started walking around town, and that's when it happened.
Sophia was working around town when she noticed him. There he was, Spencer Grant Serrett walking around alone at night also. Sophia had gone to school with Spencer since Kindergarten, but she switched schools after fourth grade, and they met back up in High School. Sophia and Spencer used to play together. As they got older, the other kids would warn Sophia that Spencer was not someone she should associate with because he was not from a well-known family. He was an outer towner and, he was being raised by a single mother who worked at the local diner. Sophia didn't care; she has always had a special bond with Spencer. He has treated like a normal human being to him. She was no one in his eyes, just Sophia. Sophia liked that the best about Spencer because she could finally be herself, not a little lady or Walter's and Mary's daughter.
When her interest in boys started, she started to see Spencer in a whole new light. But she didn't dare jeopardize their friendship over her feeling at that age. After she switched schools, she never thought her feelings would remain the same way about him when she saw him again four years later. But the moment her eyes laid upon him, her heart did a flip and started to beat out of control. Spencer just gave her that famous Spencer smirk and kept walking by. All her friends were swooning over Spencer and his bad-boy image. Sophia wanted to go right up to him and start talking to him. Still, she was frozen in her spot; the only boy she ever had a crush on and the boy who she wished could be friends without being judged was just down the hall. She was scared; what do you say to someone you haven't seen in four years.
