Why Kids Benefit From Martial Arts

The many reasons to sign your children up for martial arts classes.

Most people think of sparring and self-defense when considering martial arts subjects. While these are a part of martial arts, they are certainly not the whole. Martial arts (any chosen form) help instill discipline, promote mental health, and encourage positive self-esteem.

The benefits of martial arts are limitless - a fact that is especially true for those that get into martial arts at a young age. There are many additional advantages to beginning martial arts young. Here are a few reasons to consider signing your children up for martial arts.

Self-Defense

As mentioned above, self-defense is perhaps the most popular reason for joining martial arts. It’s certainly what the public thinks of first. Learning the basics of self-defense is incredibly beneficial, regardless of age.

Teaching these self-defense lessons at an early age ensures that a child can protect themselves against potential bullies and predators. It also helps inform children of the importance of situational awareness.

Discipline

The second reason to sign a child up for a martial arts class is to teach them about discipline. A student that wants to learn has to understand that they must show up for every class, set aside time to practice, and listen to their instructor. By following these steps, they will not only become more proficient in their chosen martial arts style, but they will become more disciplined.

Improved Concentration

The best students in martial arts are the ones that show up to class each week and actively attempt to participate and learn. In other words, showing up and pretending to pay attention won't work in a martial arts class.

Being forced to pay attention and participate has a positive effect on concentration. As a bonus, it will also teach children the skill of active listening and observation.

Confidence

Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence tend to go hand in hand. When a child (or adult) feels uncertain, bullied, or anxious, they tend to feel like everything about themself is lacking.

Thankfully, taking the time to learn martial arts can help improve self-esteem and confidence. This is because they gain achievements with each lesson passed, enjoy time spent in a social environment, and work to improve their mind and physical health.

Coordination

Parents hoping to find a way to improve motor skills and coordination should really consider martial arts. Martial arts increase reaction time and coordination through several different methods.

In truth, martial arts is much like many other sports, where physical activity is enough to help promote physical traits such as coordination and fine motor skills. The added benefit is increasing one’s balance, building muscle, and improving flexibility.

Self Improvement

They say that a person is never truly done learning - or improving. Martial arts helps bring this lesson home, as it will always encourage students to try new things, set new goals, and work on personal improvement.

For example, many martial art forms have a belt or similar ranking system, giving children something to work towards. These benchmarks are a mark of dedication and pride. They are also a method of encouragement for those working their way up the ladder.

Respect

When one dedicates themselves to martial arts, they learn about respect. Respect is two-fold. First, one learns about respect for their instructor and fellow students. This is a significant element in many martial arts forms and should never be overlooked. Second, one learns about respect for oneself. This one is less often talked about but is still incredibly important.

A Variety of Choices

Last but not least, martial arts offers everyone a variety of choices. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of different martial art styles to follow. For example, karate encompasses all Japanese-style martial arts, meaning that there are dozens of options in that field alone. Likewise, one can choose from different styles of Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Kumdo, and Kiu Jitsu.
