Why I Didn’t Get Soundcity Job That Ended Up Going to Kemi Adetiba - Toke Makinwa
Toke Makinwa spills the full tea about Soundcity job

Toke Makinwa had guest Denrele Edun on her podcast for her latest episode and both artistes took a trip down memory lane. One thing they talked about that Toke had never talked about in public before was why she rejected a Soundcity job that eventually got given to movie director today Kemi Adetiba. Denrele brought it up and together in conversation, both parties broke down exactly what actually happened behind the scenes. Here's what Toke and Denrele explained transpired.

Here's how the conversation went about the matter:
Denrele: Let me just say this out here, small tea. Toke was supposed to work at soundcity. Toke was going to be a Soundcity VJ. I remember you and I had a conversation and I thought you were definitely going to get this gig. But here's the crazy thing. Toke didn't come to the office again and the person that now resumed work was Kemi Adetiba.
Toke Makinwa: Let me tell you what happened. Ah! The days of our hustles. I remember walking into my audition and seeing Denrele there helped my audition because I was so nervous. Like I really wanted that job. This was me trying to become a TV presenter so bad. And I never really said the reason why I didn't take that job. But I'm going to say it because I don't care now. So one of the people there, I thought the person took an interest because they really wanted to give me the job. But at 2am in the morning, he was calling my phone to come and meet me him at a hotel in Lekki. I almost died. You know when the phone is ringing and it's supposed to be this person that's like [powerful]. So I'm like "heyyy" and he's like "Ah ah, where are you?" I'm like ah ah, this is like 2am in the morning. Me I thought you were calling to tell me that I got the job. But I thought even at 2am, it's a bit ridiculous to be calling me to tell me I got the job. But it was one of the times, and we don't talk about this a lot in the industry, where people feel like you need to do something before you get a job. And I ran. I just never came back. I think I hung up on the guy and bless his heart, he never tried again. He got the message and I knew I wasn't going to get a call to get that job. It put a bad taste in my mouth for the entertainment industry. I was so scared. It was only you I told.
Denrele: And I remember because I was thinking you were going to come back. There was a particular show they had already fashioned out for you. And there was another presenter who was doing the show but of course she was going to UK. And I think the person who called you at 2am was angry with her. So I just knew somebody else lightskin was going to replace her. And then seeing you, I just felt "ah, this person has gotten the job already" and you're an English major, you will even make the job easier. So when I didn't see you, I just got the underlying message that oh sister did not co-operate.
Hmm. The things really happening behind the scenes in this industry. It's funny how little we know being on the outside of these things. Wow! Let me know your thoughts about this by leaving a comment either below or on my Jide Okonjo Facebook post.
