What's really happening?

By Jide OkonjoPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

It's not good news for Nollywood actors and producers, Fred Amata (popular for appearing in such movies as Suicide Mission, Moral Inheritance), Charles Novia (popular for appearing in such movies as Missing Angel, Alan Poza), and Fidelis Duker (popular for such movies as King of Money, Monica). They are being dragged to court and being sued for a whooping 435 million naira, which just doesn't even sound like real money. That is HUGE!

The question though, is why? Why are Fred, Charles, and Fidelis being sued? Well, that is what I'm here to tell you today. Without further ado, let's get into it.

Why are Fred Amata, Charles Novia, and Fidelis Duker being sued?

Fred Amata, Charles Novia, Fidelis Duker

Well, actors and producers Fred Amata, Charles Novia, and Fidelis Duker are being sued by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) for owing a huge debt of N435,480,241.20.

Apparently, Charles, Fred, and Fidelis (the defendants) are all under the company, Project Nollywood Production Limited, and the company was a customer of Eco Bank Nigeria. In 2007, they were given a loan. By February 2010, the defendants under their company proposed a repayment plan for the loan. By May of that same 2010, the defendants indicated they would be unable to maintain the repayment plan they had earlier proposed.

This is why AMCON has now dragged Charles, Fred, Fidelis, and their company to a federal high court in Lagos. AMCON is demanding A LOT of money from these men and their company. According to court documents, AMCON is seeking:

1. The sum of N435,480,241.20 ( Four hundred and thirty-five million, four hundred and eighty thousand, two hundred and forty-one Naira, Twenty-Kobo) being the outstanding indebtedness of the defendants as at April 29, 2022.

2. Interest at the rate of fifteen percent (15%) per annum on the said sum of N435,480,241.20 (Four Hundred and Thirty-Five Million, Four Hundred and Eighty Thousand, Two Hundred and Forty-One Naira, Twenty Kobo) from April 29, 2022 until judgment is delivered.

3. Interest at the rate of ten percent (10%) per annum on the judgment sum from the date of entry of final judgment in the suit until the said judgment sum is fully and finally liquidated.

4. An order directing the defendants to pay AMCON the cost of this action in the sum of N5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira Only).

This means that what they are actually seeking is way more than the N435 million alone. How on earth are these three actors supposed to raise such amount of money? Wow!

The presiding judge of the case, Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke has adorned he suit till May 10, 2023 when it will be heard.

Wow! Fred Amata and Charles Novia, two actors that I haven't really even seen in any major blockbuster in recent times. How will they raise over N400 million? Ha! What do you think about this story? Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment either below or on my Jide Okonjo Facebook post.
