Dr. Zo is sparking debate

By Jide OkonjoPublished about a year ago 3 min read

There is currently an ongoing debate happening on social media as regards the tradition of building big mansions in the village. It is something that happens a lot, and that a lot of people desire to do. But now, a Nigerian doctor based in Canada named Dr. Zo who also built his own house in the village five years ago, is now speaking about why he believes it's rubbish and a waste of money, of course to the agreement and disagreement of so many. Here's what Dr. Zo had to say.

Speaking about why he believes that building a mansion in the village is a waste of money, Dr. Zo said:

DR. ZO: Obviously, I'm Igbo, I'm from the Eastern part of the country and what I'm about to say is a bit controversial, but I always speak from the mind and I always say the truth. There is this thing we have in the East that we must build big mansions in the village. For you to be an Odogwu, you have to build a very big house. I did it too.

This last Christmas, I watched a lot of people go home and open their mighty big mansions in the East especially. As I said, I did it, and my own was even painstaking because my dad passed. I started building the house before he passed, but I had to finish it. And believe it or not, because I'm the first son, he was alive. He insisted that I had to build it within the same compound. So I took a couple of steps around and built another mansion, everywhere is squashed up. I haven't been there. I built it about 5 years ago, and the total number of days I've spent in that house is not up to six weeks. In 5 years. I spent a lot of money to build that house in the village because my father was a traditional chief. So for you to take over the title, you have to have your own house as an odogwu. This is just what we have in the mind.

Sometimes I wonder, we the Igbos claim that we are very smart in terms of economy and money things, but sometimes I wonder the economic value. If I built that house somewhere else: Lagos, Abuja, even Enugu, I would have made over 100 million in those last 5 years, I'm telling you the truth.

I'm not saying you should not build a house in the village, what I'm telling you is what I advice my younger ones: go to the village and just build small house. 3, 4 bedroom. Have a big compound in case you want to do something in the future. It's always good to have something in the village, but you don't have to build these mansions like the way we do. It's rubbish
