Unspoken Regrets

Love was not an anchor, nor an ocean

By Uncledee'Published about a year ago 3 min read

He stood up, "I know when I'm not wanted," and left, never to look back at her after all she had put him through and the secrets she had hidden that eventually unraveled. "I went down your sanctuary and tasted the secrets; it wasn't you, the woman I've held so dear, loved deeply, and provided for, protected as a man should. But why these, after all the years? Why, Cassandra?" He stepped out of the door, still perplexed, the memories of their good times flashed before him. Deep down, he was yelling in sadness but holding hard his tears. "The painful thing about a relationship is realizing you are alone."

Those words pierced through Cassandra like a knife, sharp and unyielding. She had been strong in her resolve, believing she could keep her worlds separate, that the vibration of her hidden desires would never reach the heart she had sworn to cherish. But now, those echoes were louder than ever, reverberating off the walls of the life they had built together, crumbling everything she thought she could protect.

She sank to the floor, her breath shallow, her thoughts frantic. The room, once a sanctuary of shared dreams and whispered promises, now felt suffocating, the air thick with the weight of her choices. Cassandra could see his figure fading into the distance through the window, each step he took further away was a reminder of the trust she had shattered, the love she had betrayed.

She once believed that love was an anchor, that could hold her steady against the pull of her restlessness. But now she realized that love had been the ocean, vast and deep, capable of both nurturing and drowning her. And she had underestimated its power, thinking she could navigate its waters without consequence.

The memories came rushing back, of the nights they spent laughing under the stars, the couple gossip, the mornings when he would kiss her forehead before leaving for work, of the times he had stood by her side, unwavering, even when life’s storms threatened to tear them apart. She had taken it all for granted, convinced that his love was unbreakable, that he would always be there no matter what.

But now, as the silence grew louder, she understood the depth of her mistake. Love was not an anchor, nor an ocean; it was a fragile flame, needing constant care to keep burning. And she had let it flicker, unnoticed, until it was too late.

Cassandra’s tears fell freely now, each drop, a painful admission of her guilt. She had gambled with their future, and she had lost. The thought of him walking away, finding solace in someone else’s arms, tore at her heart. She wanted to scream, to run after him, to beg for his forgiveness, but she knew deep down that the damage had been done. Some wounds, she realized, could not be healed with words, not even with the most sincere apologies.

The house felt emptier than ever, each room a ghostly reminder of what once was. She stood up, her legs weak, and wandered through their home, touching the objects they had collected together, each telling a story of love, of a bond she had foolishly broken. The pain was unbearable, a weight she would carry for the rest of her life - maybe.

He was out there, somewhere, trying to make sense of the betrayal, and she was here, drowning in the sorrow of her own making. She had lost him, and with him, she had lost a part of herself. The realization that she was now truly alone, not just in her heart but in her soul, was the cruelest punishment she’d endure.

And so, Cassandra was left to her solitude, haunted by the memories of a love that could have been eternal, if only she had not let the shadows of her desires obscure the light.

“I broke a good man’s heart, my rock, my man!” she wailed.
