Unlucky Love

A Story That Could Have Been

By LUNA EDITHPublished 5 months ago 4 min read
Sometimes love is real, but fate is unkind. Unlucky love leaves the heart full, yet forever empty

Love is often celebrated as a blessing, a force that bridges distance, culture, and even time itself. But sometimes, love becomes a cruel twist of fate. This is the story of Elena and Adrian—a love so strong it should have lasted forever, yet unlucky enough to be torn apart by life itself.

The First Glance

Elena was a literature student in Prague, a young woman who believed more in books than in people. Every afternoon, she carried her novels and journals to a little café near Charles Bridge. The place was her sanctuary—the warm smell of roasted coffee beans, the violin music played by street performers outside, the soft chatter of tourists passing through.

One morning, while sipping her tea, Elena noticed a stranger sitting across the room. He was sketching something in a notebook. His dark hair fell slightly across his forehead, and there was an intensity in his eyes that didn’t match the casual atmosphere of the café. Their gazes met for a brief moment, and though she quickly looked away, her heart carried a quiet spark.

That stranger was Adrian—a traveler from Madrid, Spain, in Prague for a short work project. He wasn’t looking for love; he was looking for inspiration. Yet, fate has its own plans, and in that brief moment, his heart whispered the same truth Elena had felt: this person matters.

The Days That Followed

Their story began with polite conversations. Adrian asked about the books Elena was always buried in. She smiled shyly and asked about the sketches in his notebook. Soon, their curiosity turned into companionship.

They started walking together after the café closed, wandering along the Vltava River where the evening lights danced on the water. Their laughter blended with the sound of the street musicians, and slowly, the silence between them turned into something sacred—something deeper than words.

Adrian confessed that her presence made him feel at home, even though he was far from Spain. Elena admitted that she had always feared love, but with him, she felt safe, as if love didn’t have to hurt.

The city of Prague became their witness—the cobblestone streets, the ancient towers, the bridges arching across the river. Everything seemed to echo their growing bond. Their love was the kind that poets write about, the kind of connection that makes strangers turn their heads in envy.

When Fate Interferes

But life does not bow to love, no matter how strong. Adrian’s work project ended sooner than expected, forcing him back to Madrid. Elena still had years left of her studies.

They promised to fight for their love. They promised that distance would not win. And for a while, they kept that promise.

They spent sleepless nights on video calls, whispering dreams and sharing laughter across miles. They wrote letters filled with ink and hope. And every reunion was a piece of heaven, as if the universe had folded the distance just to let them hold each other again.

Yet, slowly, reality began to weigh them down. Adrian’s mother fell ill, and he had to work longer hours to support his family. Elena’s father lost his job, and she took on extra work to help at home. The calls became fewer, the visits rarer, and the silences heavier.

Their love was still alive—but like a flame without air, it began to flicker.

The Breaking Point

One cold evening, while snow fell silently over Prague, Elena’s phone buzzed with a message. It was from Adrian. Her hands trembled as she opened it.

"I think we need to let each other go."

She read the words over and over, her tears blurring the screen. It wasn’t that he didn’t love her—she knew he did. It wasn’t that she didn’t love him—her heart was still entirely his. But sometimes, love isn’t enough. Sometimes, life demands sacrifices that even love can’t overcome.

For three days, she couldn’t respond. She walked the streets they had once walked together. She sat at the café where they first met, remembering his sketches, his laugh, the warmth of his hand in hers. Finally, with trembling fingers, she typed back:

"I will always love you. Even if unlucky love is all we get."

That was the last message between them.

Years Later

Time moved forward, as it always does. Elena finished her studies. Adrian built a stable career. On the surface, they both moved on. Yet, beneath the weight of daily life, their hearts carried the echo of a love that might have been.

Sometimes, on quiet evenings, Elena still visits that café near Charles Bridge. She orders her tea and opens a book, but her eyes often drift toward the door, as if expecting Adrian to walk in. She doesn’t hate love, but she has learned that love is not always forever.

Adrian still travels to Prague for work from time to time. He never steps into the café again, but he passes by it with a heavy heart. He doesn’t need to look inside to know she is still a part of him.

Somewhere in the universe, they believe their love still exists—untouched, unbroken, timeless. Just not in this life.

Because sometimes, love is real. Sometimes, it is deep. And sometimes, it is just heartbreakingly unlucky.
