The Whispering Passenger

Part Two: Strange Request

By BabaPublished 11 months ago 3 min read

It was just past 11 AM, and I had been on the road since 4 AM, already deep into my shift. After dropping off a customer at the San Francisco Zoo near Ocean Beach, I found myself craving another cup of coffee. So, I pulled over around Taraval Street and 22nd Avenue to grab a caramel macchiato to go.

I didn’t think much of it—just a quick stop to recharge. But I had no idea that this small break was about to lead to one of the most unusual experiences of my day.

As I stepped out of the bakery with my coffee in hand, I heard a soft voice behind me.

"Are you occupied?"

I turned to see a woman in her mid-thirties, well-dressed in slacks and a tailored coat. She held a purse in one arm and a laptop bag in the other, looking like someone on her way to an important meeting. She had an air of quiet confidence, yet there was something almost hesitant about the way she spoke.

Smiling, I playfully whispered back, "It’s vacant if you need a ride."

She nodded and followed me to the cab, walking around to sit right behind the driver’s seat. I opened the door for her, and as she got in, I asked, “Where are you headed?”

"I work downtown," she said, "but can we go to Fisherman’s Wharf first? I need you to find me a nice spot with a view of the ocean and the city."

A little unusual, but nothing too strange. People often ask for scenic detours, especially visitors.

As we drove toward the wharf, she suddenly extended her hand to the front seat, offering me a wad of cash.

"Here, this is for you," she said.

I glanced at the money—easily ten times more than what the meter would read by the time we got there.

"This is way too much," I told her.

"It’s for you," she insisted. "And I’ll still pay whatever’s on the meter when we’re done."

Most passengers during the day shift pay using credit cards or digital transactions. A young woman handing over a large tip in cash, without any reason or request, felt a little odd. But as a cab driver, you learn not to question every unexpected moment—you just go with it.

I decided to find her the perfect spot. I knew just the place—down by the water, near the end of Van Ness Avenue. From there, you could see the Golden Gate Bridge stretching across the bay, Alcatraz sitting in the distance, and the tall buildings of downtown standing against the skyline.

Before I could even pull into a parking spot, she whispered again. By now, I realized that whispering wasn’t a sign of nervousness—it was just how she talked.

"Park the cab at an angle," she said, "so I can see everything from my window."

I did as she asked. She rolled down her window, took a deep breath, and pulled out a neatly packed lunch. That’s when it clicked—she didn’t need a ride to Fisherman’s Wharf. She just wanted a peaceful place to sit and enjoy her meal with a view.

Some passengers want conversation. Others prefer silence. And then, sometimes, you meet someone like her—someone who just wants a quiet moment, a good meal, and a beautiful cityscape to go with it.

She ate slowly, savoring each bite, while gazing out at the water. The city moved around us—cars passing, people walking, the sound of seagulls in the distance. But inside that cab, it felt like time had paused, just for her.

After a peaceful lunch, I drove her to Sutter and Mason Street. As she stepped out, she turned back and whispered, “Thank you.”

I watched as she disappeared into the crowd, and as I pulled away, I couldn’t help but wonder—who would my next strange passenger be?
