The Roads of Power

How to Navigate the Chaos of a World Without Direction

The Roads of Power

Surely you’ve heard the famous saying, “All roads lead to Rome,” but have you ever reflected on the deeper meaning behind it? This celebrated saying reflects the extraordinary power that ancient Rome wielded through a network of infrastructures built with a precise purpose: to extend dominance and strengthen control.

Roman roads were not mere routes of connection, but strategic tools designed to move troops, facilitate trade, and maintain control over vast territories. Ancient Rome understood that building roads was one of the keys to keeping the empire united, to bring resources where needed, and above all, to subjugate new territories.

In fact, Roman roads were not only practical and functional; they also carried symbolic value. They reaffirmed Rome’s centrality and its control over the known world. From this, the concept arose that all roads lead to Rome—an affirmation that expressed not only a physical reality but also a political truth: Rome was the center of the world, and every other road that was built ultimately served the interests of the empire.

But the construction of roads was not limited to ancient Rome. Moving forward in time, we see how other powers—such as pre-war Germany—built infrastructures with the same purpose of domination and preparation for war. German highways, for example, were a grand project that appeared to promote mobility and prosperity but in reality played a fundamental role in strengthening the Nazi war machine. Roads—like vehicles and railways—are never just means of transport; they are instruments of power, built with a precise purpose that often goes far beyond mere convenience.

What History Teaches Us

You can feel it too—we are living through a period of historical transition, a moment where uncertainty seems to reign. The structures of the past, those that once gave us a sense of security, are collapsing, leaving space for a future that no one can truly predict.

Every day we find ourselves immersed in a sea of change, where old answers are no longer valid and new solutions remain shrouded in shadows. Reality, once solid and understandable, now slips through our fingers like sand, as the world around us moves at a dizzying pace—sometimes frenzied, sometimes quietly unsettling.

Today, in a world that is going through profound uncertainty, we face a similar paradox. Modern roads—both physical and metaphorical—are constantly offered to us. The paths of technology, consumerism, and politics are presented as the only solutions to our discomforts. But is it really possible to trust these new roads without first asking: Who built them, and what purposes do they truly serve?

We live in an era where certainties have vanished, and the old roads—the ones that once seemed to lead us in the right direction—no longer take us anywhere. Politics, the economy, society: all these structures that once appeared solid now seem to crumble, leaving us disoriented and unsure of which direction to take. The roads once traced out for us no longer exist, or at least, are no longer recognizable as valid.

History teaches us that behind every new road, behind every new infrastructure, there are always hidden purposes. When I think about this, the German railways of the Second World War come to mind—built to carry prisoners straight to concentration camps. Once invented, railway tracks were a symbol of progress and modernity, only to be used years later as tools of destruction.

This is precisely the point: the roads we are offered are never neutral. Every path has a purpose, and every “road” built today has an objective that often does not match its declared intention. By now, we know that the logic of power is never transparent.

Does the Right Path Exist?

We all feel lost, isolated, and unsure of which path to take. We have all realized that what once was certain no longer is. The answers to the fundamental questions of life—who we are, what we truly want, which direction we should follow—never seem to arrive with clarity.

Instead, the background noise of consumerist society, social pressure, and collective expectations constantly floods our minds. We are told what we should desire, what we should be, what we should do. And yet, the more we follow these external voices, the more lost we feel—like a passenger who has boarded the wrong train, heading toward an unknown destination.

In this scenario, it becomes clear that there is a fundamental truth to be rediscovered—a core principle hidden beneath the distortions of the modern world. That truth is the key to navigating the uncertainty that surrounds us.

The chaos and uncertainty around us make us feel powerless and without clear direction. But in reality, to stop feeling alone and lost, we must remember that we are like drops of water, part of a much larger ocean—a vast sea of universal wisdom and knowledge. Each drop, though unique, belongs to a system far greater and more powerful than we can imagine.

And in this vast and mysterious sea, the key to finding our way lies in something we often ignore or set aside: the inner voice.

That voice, silent yet constant within us, is the only guide that never fails. It is not influenced by external forces, by the changes of society, or by the expectations of others. It is the voice that connects us to the deepest essence of our being—the one that helps us understand who we truly are and what we truly want. Listening to it requires courage, because it is not always the easiest road to take, but it is the only one that will truly lead us to where we want to go.

If you feel disoriented, if it seems the roads offered to you do not lead to happiness or well-being, know that you are not alone. Each of us has within a clear direction—a path never traced by others but discoverable only through self-awareness.

And this awareness is born from listening inward, from the silence that allows us to hear the beat of our heart and the universal wisdom that guides us.

To embark on this journey, however, requires one more step.
