Jagadeesh had never been the type to wear his heart on his sleeve. He was the quiet one, always in the background, observing rather than speaking. But there was something—or rather someone—that had stirred his heart in a way he wasn’t prepared for.

Dharsheena.

She wasn’t the loudest in the room, nor the most popular. She was simply… kind. The way she laughed with her friends, helped others without a second thought, and her easy smile that lit up her face had drawn Jagadeesh in. He couldn’t quite pinpoint when his admiration for her turned into something more, but here he was, heart fluttering every time he saw her in the hallway.

His crush had grown quietly, almost unnoticed, until one day it was all he could think about. Every time Dharsheena looked his way, he felt his cheeks warm, and his mind raced with "what ifs." He wondered what it would be like to talk to her beyond the casual greetings or shy smiles they occasionally exchanged. Would she find him interesting? Could she feel the same way?

Weeks passed, and Jagadeesh's feelings only deepened. He began to notice the small things—how Dharsheena always helped her classmates, how she stayed behind after school to assist with events. Every action made his crush on her feel a little more real, and a little more impossible to hide.

But he was torn. How could he confess something so personal? What if she didn’t feel the same way? Worse, what if she found it awkward and distanced herself? The fear of rejection gnawed at him every time the thought of telling her crossed his mind.

One Friday afternoon, fate stepped in. The school was hosting a charity event, and both Jagadeesh and Dharsheena had signed up to help. It was the perfect opportunity—or so Jagadeesh’s best friend, Arun, had insisted. Arun had been urging him to take a chance for weeks.

“You’ve got to say something!” Arun urged. “She’s not going to know how you feel if you keep hiding.”

“I’m just… I don’t know how to bring it up,” Jagadeesh admitted, nervously fiddling with his pen.

“You don’t need to make it a grand gesture. Just talk to her. You’ll know when the moment’s right,” Arun said, giving him a reassuring pat on the back.

That evening, as they were setting up tables and decorations, Jagadeesh found himself next to Dharsheena. They worked in silence for a few moments, the air between them comfortable yet thick with the things he hadn’t said.

Suddenly, Dharsheena spoke. “You’re always so quiet, Jagadeesh. I feel like we’ve been around each other for ages, but I don’t really know much about you.”

Jagadeesh’s heart leapt at the chance to finally have a real conversation. He smiled nervously and said, “Yeah, I guess I’m just not great at putting myself out there.”

“That’s okay. I think it’s kind of nice. You seem… thoughtful,” she replied, glancing over at him with a soft smile.

Jagadeesh’s pulse quickened. Was this the moment? The one Arun had talked about? He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “Dharsheena, can I ask you something?”

“Sure, what’s up?” she said, pausing her work to face him fully.

His mind raced. The words were right there, but his fear was still louder. But then he thought about all the times he’d wished he’d been braver, all the missed opportunities, and realised that this was one moment he didn’t want to regret.

“I… I’ve kind of liked you for a while,” he said softly, his eyes focused on the floor. “And I didn’t know how to say it, but I just wanted to let you know.”

The silence that followed felt like a lifetime. Jagadeesh’s heart pounded in his chest, and he was certain he could feel his face turning bright red. He dared to look up and saw Dharsheena’s expression—a mixture of surprise and something else he couldn’t quite read.

She opened her mouth to speak, and for a split second, Jagadeesh prepared himself for rejection. But then she smiled—a warm, genuine smile that made his heart skip.

“Jagadeesh… I had no idea,” she said, her voice gentle. “But I’m really glad you told me. I’ve always thought you were really sweet, and I’d love to get to know you better.”

Jagadeesh blinked, hardly believing what he was hearing. “Really?”

“Really,” she nodded. “Maybe we could grab a coffee sometime? Talk more?”

A wave of relief and excitement washed over him, and for the first time in weeks, the weight of his secret crush lifted. “I’d like that,” he said, smiling back.

As they continued working side by side, Jagadeesh couldn’t help but feel lighter, his heart full of possibilities. He had taken the leap, and for once, it hadn’t ended in heartbreak or awkwardness. Instead, it was the beginning of something new—something that might just turn his quiet crush into something much more real.

And as they packed up for the night, Dharsheena walked beside him, chatting easily about everything and nothing, and Jagadeesh knew that no matter what happened next, he had finally taken his chance.
