The Lottery of Fate

Wealth and Betrayal

By HeydoPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

In a small town where life meandered like a slow-moving river, there lived a man named Frank. A few years back, Frank had been a long-distance truck driver. He traveled from the northernmost regions to the southernmost parts of the country, witnessing the vast and diverse landscapes that stretched under the sun. The open roads were his companions, and the stars his only audience as he drove through the quiet nights.

Frank had a peculiar habit of telling tall tales. His stories would become more grandiose and exaggerated when he had a drink or two. His friends and family had grown accustomed to his flights of fancy, often rolling their eyes but always entertained. One evening, after returning from a long haul and having a couple of drinks, Frank playfully confided in his wife that he had hit someone on the road and buried them under a tree. Little did he know that this jest would cast a long shadow over their lives. It was actually a dog that had met such an end.

Later on, when his wife accompanied him on a trip, Frank, still in a jocular mood, pointed out the "scene" with a straight face. His wife, though skeptical, played along, chuckling at his imaginative antics. Frank was a lottery enthusiast. Despite his frequent losses, he never gave up on the hope of striking it rich. He would often daydream about the life he could have if fortune smiled upon him, and those dreams fueled his persistent habit of buying lottery tickets week after week.

And then, one day, fortune did smile upon him. He hit the jackpot, winning over a million dollars. The news spread like wildfire through the town, and everyone congratulated Frank on his incredible luck. At the news, his wife made a decision that would set off a chain of events. She declared that half of the prize money should go to her mother. Why she made such a choice was unclear, but Frank was adamantly against it. Who could blame him? After all, it’s only natural for a person to want to hold on to what luck has given them.

However, the next day brought a shocking turn of events. Frank was taken away by the police on the accusation of having run over a person in the past. The news stunned the town, and whispers began to circulate. The police took him to the so-called "scene of the crime" and began to dig under the tree. To everyone's surprise, all they found were the skeletal remains of a dog. The town was abuzz with confusion and curiosity.

The police then apologized to Frank, explaining that they had acted on an anonymous tip-off. As for who made the call, Frank was left to wonder. Suspicion began to creep into his mind. Could it be someone he knew? Someone who wanted a share of his newfound wealth? The possibilities were endless, and the trust that once bound the town began to fray.

It became clear that when faced with the temptation of wealth, people could become ruthless and heartless. The anonymous call had shattered the calm of Frank's life and exposed the darker side of human nature. In the end, Frank was left to ponder the true cost of his lottery win and the lengths to which people would go for a piece of fortune. But one thing was certain: the call had come from someone who knew his past, someone who had listened to his drunken boasting and held onto the information for a rainy day. And as Frank sat in the silence of his home, the weight of betrayal hung heavy in the air.
