The wind blew through his hair as he stood on the edge of the building, looking down at the depths below. He couldn't believe he was about to do this. It was nuts, what could have led him to this path.
He started to go through the memories in his head. Four years earlier he met her. She was a dream come true. Just weeks before he met her he had promised himself never again would he fall for someone he couldn't meet. Well he did it anyway. She was a dream come true and her name was Samantha. She was everything he could hope for and more.
It started as idle chit chat, and led to so much more. He remembered the first time hearing her voice on the phone it was like a static charge went off inside his very soul. He felt a tingle, travel from his head to his toes. The sound of her voice was angelic. From that point on they talked daily. He knew that he would marry her one day. He knew she was his soul mate.
As the years went by they went through trials and tribulations together. Hurricanes, financial problems, and even illnesses. He had been with her through everything. He gave her money when she needed it. He gave his very soul and every fiber of himself to her.
3yrs had gone by and they were approaching the 4yr mark and everything changed. He couldn't understand but he knew something was different. He knew in his heart that she had changed, they had changed, everything had changed. She denied it but he knew and he held his breath for the day that everything would go back to normal.
As the months went by they grew more and more distant, but he couldn't let her go. He tried and tried to break things off but the words wouldn't come. He tried to tell her he knew she had found someone else, but then she changed his words and made him feel as if he had done wrong. He didn't know what to do anymore.....
All this had led him to where he was now. He still clutched the cell phone she gave him in his hand. He thought of it as his collar now. Her way of holding him and keeping him from running free. Though he couldn't just seem to throw it away. He picked up the phone and looked at the digital display.
"Why,” he cried, “Why can't you just end it so I can be free?!" he demanded as the darkening sky above. It began to rain and mixed with the tears running down his face. He looked over the edge again and could distantly make out the dark alley below. He knew this was the only way he would ever escape the pain, the hurt, the suffering.
He stared into the darkness below, and he began to cry harder. How could things have come to this he thought. How could I have let this go so far he asked himself. He knew it had to be done, so he just let himself do the necessary. He stepped closer to the edge. His footing began to slip and he faltered, and cried out despite his resolution.
He knew it was time, and took a deep breath as he readied himself for it. Suddenly the phone rang. He fought every urge he had to answer it. He knew it was her. She was the only one that ever called the phone. He listened to the buzzing ring of the phone and he did what needed to be done. He watched as the darkness enveloped..................................
The phone fell into the darkness below shattering on the concrete below. He stepped back from the ledge, the tears still flowing. He couldn't stop crying as he began his descent down the stairs back to his apt. It was for the best. All things had to come to an end. He would never fall for another woman online again. This he knew for sure.
