Phosphate-buffered ethanol 70% (BE70) is a new fixative that mimics the histomorphology and biomolecular integrity of neutral-buffered formalin (NBF), with a non-cross-linking profile and lack of carcinogenicity. BE70 was compared to NBF, using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining to examine tissue sections from the mouse kidney. RNA isolated from BE70-fixed tissue showed higher quality and quantity than that from NBF-fixed tissue.
